The city has taken so many positions over the years that I'm a little lost as to whether it's even legal to grow in the city even though it's legal under state law. I just want to grow one plant for myself. Can I do it? — Jim S., Medford. Yes, the city has gone back and forth on the marijuana issue, Jim. So intrepid members of the Since You Asked Pot Patrol worked their way through the legal smoke — but didn't inhale, honest — to clear the air for you on this concern. They checked in with Kevin McConnell, deputy city attorney, and he said residents can grow up to four plants inside the city limits. Even with our limited math skills, Jim, we're pretty sure that means you're on solid legal ground if you grow one plant. The city does have an odor ordinance, so a neighbor could complain about the smell of your plant, and the city might ask you to pull it out. On the November ballot, there are two measures residents will consider. One would continue banning the sale of recreational marijuana inside the city. Medford currently allows only the sale of medical marijuana at dispensaries. Another measure would place a 3 percent tax on recreational marijuana sales in addition to any state taxes. This measure would take effect only if voters approve the first measure allowing the sale of recreational pot.
