The seventh annual Zwickelmania Oregon Brewery Tour is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Six local breweries will join more than 100 from around the state in a day of meet-the-brewer events, tours and, of course, hop-happy suds. Medford's Bricktowne Brewing, Opposition Brewing and Wild River Pizza & Brewing, along with Ashland's Standing Stone and Caldera Brewing, and White City's Fire Cirkl will participate. Visitors will find special deals on brews and merchandise, along with samples of beer — paired at some locations with cheese or chocolate. Oregon Craft Beer officials said nearly 37,000 people statewide participated in the 2014 event, touring 105 breweries. Standing Stone head brewer Larry Chase says Zwickelmania is named for the "zwickel," a valve that can be attached to a port on the side of a brewing tank to sample the fermenting beverage inside. "It's a good German word," Chase says. He adds the event provides an up-close look at the day-to-day work inside breweries. "Since it's a statewide event, you get multiple breweries participating on the same day," Chase says. "It's fun for people to be able to see different breweries and how they brew beer. It's fun to get crowds coming." Beer lovers interested in making the trip to the Oregon Coast or into Josephine or Klamath counties will have several breweries to choose from in Grants Pass, Coos Bay, Gold Beach, Klamath Falls, Brookings, Roseburg and Cave Junction.
