MAJOR LEAGUES Rangers end Astros' win streak Comment By The Associated Press MailTribune.com By The Associated Press Posted May. 5, 2015 at 2:00 AM By The Associated Press Posted May. 5, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News HOUSTON — The Texas Rangers got a much-needed win in a close game and cooled off the hottest team in baseball. Robinson Chirinos hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, and the Rangers snapped Houston's 10-game winning streak with a 2-1 win over the Astros on Monday night. "Full of grit," Texas manager Jeff Banister said about the win. "You kind of draw it up in the dirt as you go. It was a pitching victory with timely hitting." Chirinos' sacrifice fly to center scored Adrian Beltre, who led off the inning with a double off Chad Qualls (0-2), moved to third on Kyle Blanks' single and slid in as Jake Marisnick's throw to the plate went to the backstop. "The first thing I thought, it was not too deep," Chirinos said. "I hit it with the barrel, and I got just deep enough to have Adrian score that run for us." Keone Kela (2-1) pitched the eighth and Neftali Feliz got the last three outs for his third save. Texas had lost five of the last six and eight of the last 10 games entering Monday. "It's a huge win for the team," Texas starter Ross Detwiler said. "Obviously, everybody knew about the 10-game winning streak, so it's really nice to put an end to that and put a win together." GIANTS 2, PADRES 0: At San Francisco, Madison Bumgarner carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning on the way to winning back-to-back starts for the first time this season. Bumgarner (3-1) outdueled Tyson Ross (1-3), striking out six and walking one as each starter threw 107 pitches. He didn't allow a hit until Justin Upton's leadoff single in the seventh just got past reaching shortstop Brandon Crawford. MARINERS 3, ANGELS 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Nelson Cruz hit his major league-leading 14th home run and Felix Hernandez won his fifth straight decision to start the season for Seattle. Cruz celebrated his first AL Player of the Month Award with a leadoff shot against Matt Shoemaker that snapped a scoreless tie in the seventh. Hernandez (5-0) allowed a run and six hits in seven innings while striking out eight and lowering his ERA to 1.73. BREWERS 4, DODGERS 3: At Milwaukee, the Brewers rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to win Craig Counsell's managerial debut and deny Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw his 100th career win. The Brewers overcame a 3-0 deficit with one run in the sixth and three in the eighth. BLUE JAYS 3, YANKEES 1: At Toronta, pinch-hitter Russell Martin singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Toronto snapped the Yankees' six-game road winning streak. Held scoreless for seven innings by Yankees right-hander Chase Whitley, the Blue Jays scored three in the eighth against relievers Chris Martin (0-1) and Dellin Betances. R.A. Dickey (1-3) allowed one run and three hits in eight innings for his first win in six starts. PHILLIES 5, BRAVES 2: At Atlanta, Jeff Francoeur had four hits and drove in two runs, Aaron Harang allowed one run over six innings and Philadelphia beat Atlanta. Francoeur had a run-scoring double off Alex Wood (1-2) in Philadelphia's three-run first inning. Francoeur, who began his career with Atlanta, drove in another run with a triple off Jim Johnson in the ninth. He also had two singles. NATIONALS 6, MARLINS 4: At Washington, Yunel Escobar had a career-high five hits, the last a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning, and Washington rallied to beat Miami. Washington trailed 4-2 before sending eight batters to the plate in the eighth against Bryan Morris (3-1). A leadoff walk and a home run by Ian Desmond tied it, and with two outs the Nationals used three straight hits to take the lead for the first time. RAYS 5, RED SOX 1: At Boston, Jake Odorizzi pitched seven strong innings, Joey Butler hit his first career homer and Tampa Bay's offense perked up a bit. David DeJesus drove in two runs for the Rays, who scored just four runs in a three-game set this past weekend against Baltimore. CARDINALS 10, CUBS 9: At St. Louis, Tony Cruz hit a tiebreaking, two-run double to cap a four-run seventh inning, and St. Louis rallied to beat Chicago for its seventh straight win. Mark Reynolds started the comeback for the NL Central leaders, who trailed 5-0 in the first, with his fourth career grand slam in the bottom of the inning. The Cardinals improved to 19-6 for the franchise's best start since 1900. TWINS 8, ATHLETICS 7: At Minneapolis, Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer to break a sixth-inning tie, Phil Hughes earned his first win and Minnesota beat Oakland for its fifth consecutive victory. Brian Dozier and Jordan Schafer each drove in two runs for the Twins. The Athletics, off to their worst start in six years, lost for the eighth time in 11 games.
