LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 5 MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 5, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted May. 5, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Not my tax dollars In a recent Mail Tribune front-page article, Craig Harper of the Southern Oregon Land conservancy was quoted regarding his organization’s plans to buy the 352-acre MacArthur Ranch on the Rogue River. Mr. Harper said, "The opportunity to conserve this would be lost if this property were divided and sold into 5-acre lots with mansions." Of course, there are no immediate plans to re-zone the site or even to create 5-acre lots. There certainly are no “mansions” in its future. Yet, Mr. Harper’s group hopes to come up with 2.4 Million smackers, mostly from state and federal grants. That’s code for “yours and my money,” as you know. One always hopes for preservation of Southern Oregon’s natural beauty, but it chaps my lips to have a man like Harper use class-warfare tactics and terms (e.g., “mansions”) to gain his goals and, to boot, go nosing about for my tax dollars to do it. Hubert Smith Jacksonville Vote for Salmon, Case The three co-signers of this letter have numerous things in common, but two are more compelling. For one, we are all retired superintendents of Jackson County School District 6, representing Central Point, Gold Hill and Sams Valley. The other commonality is that all three of us enthusiastically endorse both Cathy Salmon and Cindy Tilley Case for election to the board of School District 6. We have worked closely with both Ms. Salmon and Tilley Case and know them to be people of honesty, integrity and dignity. They are both proud Crater High School graduates and have extensive experience with the school district; Cathy was for many years the secretary for the District 6 Human Resources department and Cindy has served admirably on the school board for 20 years. They have no set agenda other than making decisions that are good for kids. Please give them your vote. Mike McClain Jacksonville Candy Manary and Randy Gravon Medford Proselytizers ignore signs We live in a rural area on a main highway and our property is clearly posted with "No Trespassing/No Solicitors" signage for personal safety reasons. However, the local Jehovah's Witnesses have repeatedly ignored our signs even after being directly asked not to return on one of their "visits." In response to yet another uninvited intrusion, we have tried three times to mail a letter to the congregation in Shady Cove, but apparently that is not possible to do. We have used their physical address and even researched their P.O. box using the Jackson County Assessor's website (yes, its a public resource), but both appear to be undeliverable by the post office (so where do they get their mail?). In any event, our message to this congregation (and any other uninvited persons, for that matter) is to please respect our "No Trespassing/No Solicitors" signs. They are posted for our personal safety. Carolyn Jensen Trail Opting out My spouse and I both are long-standing good citizens, educated, voters, both Vietnam veterans, and lifelong progressives. And we both paid our dues in full, via long stints as middle-level yet expendable flunkies for typically-FUBAR U.S. corporations. Around 2008 — because of criminal, out-of-control (by our so called"representatives") behavior on the part of Wall Street’s insatiable gambling greed-lust, the middle class (and us) got even further hosed; in particular, both of our long-worked-for retirement programs went up in smoke. So now, living frugally on our combined Social Security, we get endless requests from well-paid fundraising flunkies — on behalf of (far, far) richer politicians — asking us for money. Gee. Beltway (Washington D.C.) insiders just can’t figure out why voter cynicism, fury and non-participation is so huge. Is it any wonder? Talk about massively out-of-touch. Until Democrats stop being a huge part of this problem, we’re opting out. Because nearly all politicians (Warren and Sanders perhaps being exceptions) are moths burning their wings off on the flame of the money game.
