The Raiders (1-4-1, 1-1 Cascade) scored twice in the opening 18 minutes and posted five more goals within 23 game minutes spanning both halves — nearly doubling the school’s entire season output. Junior all-star forward Katie Emerson compiled the fifth hat trick in program history by scoring in the 18th, 41st and 64th minutes, and junior all-star midfielder Lisa Howard set a school record with four assists to lead the 32-shot SOU attack. Albertson (0-6, 0-2 Cascade), which took seven of its eight shots in the second half, averted a shutout in the 74th minute when freshman Katie Ball scored from 10 yards out on a 2-on-1 cross-box pass from freshman Leah Roach. Howard opened the onslaught 5:05 into the contest with a close-range shot off a feed from freshman forward Stephani Catt. Advertisement Catt, freshman Mara Rappleyea and sophomore Lindsey Karsten also scored for Southern, and senior midfielder Jeannelle Thompson posted two assists. SOU caps a two-game weekend set today at 1 p.m. against Eastern Oregon, while the Coyotes travel to Klamath Falls to play Oregon Tech. Volleyball SOUTHERN OREGON 30-27-30-30, ALBERTSON 21-30-20-26 — The 11th-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team responded to each challenge presented by Albertson College in a win-streak-extending 30-21, 27-30, 30-20, 30-26 Cascade Conference victory at McNeal Pavilion. The defending league champion Raiders (9-3, 4-0) won their fifth straight overall and 16th straight against NAIA Region I competition after bouncing back from a sluggish Game 2 effort and a 7-1 deficit to start Game 4. A match-high 16 kills and 19 digs by senior outside hitter Kristin Ferris helped SOU improve to 48-12 all-time against the Coyotes (6-4, 3-2), while junior all-star setter Jamie McCreary amassed 51 assists to fuel the Raider offense that racked up 61 kills in 176 attempts for a .233 efficiency. "I like how we bounced back from some adverse moments," Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "We could have easily packed it in down 7-1 in Game 4. Overall, it was another typical back- and-forth SOU-Albertson match with several momentum swings." The Coyotes, who were picked No. 2 behind Southern in the conference preseason poll, received a 14-kill, 11-dig performance from senior outside hitter Ashlea Thornton and a match-best 25 digs from senior libero Kahli Mann. As a team, ACI collected 59 kills and 14 block assists (including five each by freshman middles Katie Hogue and Anne Parker), but the Caldwell, Idaho school committed 33 attack errors and 11 service errors. Junior middle blocker Nicholette Le Bel had 12 kills and three blocks, sophomore hitter Rachael Baran added 11 winners and junior libero Kristen Lilly notched 19 digs for SOU. SOU’s freshman trio of Richelle Millsap, Whitney Riehl and Jaclyn Hamilton-Smith combined for 14 kills and 10 digs. The Raiders host Eastern Oregon tonight at 7.
