He has a better idea now, after his Knights needed overtime to edge Illinois Valley, 27-20, Saturday. In OT, Drew DeChenne capped a five-play opening series with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Josh Makepeace — their second scoring hookup of the game. The North Valley defense then stopped the Cougars (4-1, 1-1 Skyline) on three running plays and broke up a fourth-down pass to the goal line. "I think they’re going to win more football games," acknowledged Willaman. "Going in, I was a little skeptical about them just because of the caliber of their opponents, except for Hidden Valley. But they stepped up and played very well." Advertisement So did the Knights (3-1, 2-0 Skyline), who are bidding to make their third straight trip to the state playoffs and represented quite an upgrade from two Class 2A foes Illinois Valley earlier manhandled (Gold Beach, 41-16, and Blanchet, 41-6). North Valley racked up 407 yards of offense and limited the Cougars’ potent offense to 191 yards. The Knights were on the verge of building a comfortable lead just before halftime, but IV standout Mike Pagnotta moved in and picked off a Makepeace pass at the goal line and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown with one second left until the break, making it 14-12, NV. "If we would have stuck that one in, it would have been a whole different complexion on the field," said Willaman. Makepeace was throwing an out route away from Pagnotta, but the latter caught on, cheated over and broke in on the slightly underthrown pass. "I probably went to the well once too often," admitted Willaman, who was trying to steer clear of safety Pagnotta and cornerback Natty Krauss. DeChenne, who caught eight passes for 62 yards, scored the first touchdown on a 22-yard pass from Makepeace late in the first quarter. Pagnotta answered with a 17-yard TD run for the Cougars, and NV’s Greg Richardson responded with a 1-yard score before Pagnotta’s big play. Geoff Phelps extended the Knights’ lead to 20-12 with a 25-yard run in the third quarter, but a 1-yard run by Krauss and the conversion run by Pagnotta tied it with nearly six minutes left in the period. Phelps carried 19 times for 134 yards, and Makepeace, a sophomore, was 16 of 24 passing for 156 yards and the one interception. He also had 50 yards rushing. Anthony Spain caught three passes for 66 yards for NV, including a 45-yard reception that set up its second TD. For IV, Krauss ran for 75 yards and Pagnotta 74. The Black Tornado, ranked fourth in the state, was beaten in the finals of the South Albany Tournament, 25-19, 25-22, by top-ranked West Linn. In the semifinals, North coach Ron Beick earned his 400th career coaching victory in a 25-22, 25-22 win over Mountain View. Beick is in his 10th year at North and his 26th year overall. Against West Linn, Jessica Walters had five kills and Brittany Lawson added four. Jenna Siebenlist topped the digs list with nine, and setter Allanah Munson played a solid floor game. A week earlier, North fell to No. 2 Gresham in the finals of its own tournament. In its first playoff match Saturday, the Tornado defeated sixth-ranked Ashland, 17-25, 25-14, 15-13. The match was a precursor to their Southern Oregon Conference showdown at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the North gym. North (13-2 overall) advanced to bracket play by going 3-0 in pool play, beating South Albany (25-11, 25-17), Bend (25-19, 25-17) and Thurston (25-20, 25-20). PROSPECT WINS TWO — At Prospect, Nicole Newcomb led a strong offensive attack as Prospect won two matches from North Lake in Skyline A League play. The scores were 25-23, 25-16, 25-20 in the first match and 25-12, 25-12, 25-15 in match No. 2. Newcomb had seven kills and four blocks over both matches. Lacy Musard contributed two kills, two aces and two blocks in the opening contest, while Candy Lewis served five aces. In the second match, Alicia Pace led the way with three aces. Prospect improved to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in league action. HIDDEN VALLEY TOURNAMENT — At Murphy, Butte Falls posted a 4-2 record in round-robin competition, then won two games in bracket play to claim the championship of the nine-team tournament. The Loggers, the lone Class 1A team participating, downed Phoenix behind a strong performance from their front-line, 25-23, 21-25, 15-8. In the championship match, Butte Falls (10-6 overall) ousted Glendale, 25-21, 18-25, 15-10. Middles Cassie Bartel and Sarah Matthews teamed up for 10 blocks against the Pirates, while Asia Million slammed seven kills. Butte Falls also served up seven aces during the victory. In the championship tilt, Bartel and Mickie Burns both finished with six blocks. Million produced eight kills in the finale, while Kathi St. George finished with three aces and Brianna Smeltz 15 assists. Girls Water Polo NORTH MEDFORD 9, MARIST 3 — At Eugene, North Medford won its first game after two losses, getting five goals from Katy Lawson in the Southern League match at Echo Hollow Pool. Sarah Martin added two goals and Gianna Ramos and Sarah Villeneuve one each. Lawson, Ramos and Martin each had an assist as well. Black Tornado goalie Victoria Handel amassed nine blocks. MARIST 13, SOUTH MEDFORD 8 — Nichole Fox scored three goals and Karen Kralik added two in a losing effort for South Medford. Andrea Manes, Katie Wimmer and McKenzie Pfeifer each added a goal as the Panthers fell to 0-3 in the Southern League. South goalie Selina Fowler finished with eight blocks.
