This week I evaluating the all-new 2015 MKC luxury small utility vehicle, the second of four all-new Lincoln vehicles that will be introduced through 2016 and fuel the brand’s reinvention. The first all-new vehicle was the 2013 Lincoln MKZ sedan. The new five-passenger MKC is absolutely exceptional and I’m going to have a difficult time handing the key fob back on Monday when I make the switch for next week’s vehicle. Available in front- or all-wheel drive configurations, the MKC is not only powerful, it is one of the smoothest handling vehicles I’ve driven this year. And it is absolutely loaded with every creature comfort you could possibly want — from hand-stitched leather seats and accents along with real wood trim inlays to the premium THX II audio system to the long, long list of safety features. In fact, it’s so loaded there are only three options to choose from. The MKC 2.0 front-wheel drive is powered by a 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine delivering 240 horsepower and 270 lbs.-ft. torque. Mated to a six speed SelectShift automatic transmission with paddle shifters, it requires regular unleaded fuel and has an EPA fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. The MKC 2.0 all-wheel drive version has an EPA rating of 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway. For those wanting more power, consumers have the option of the MKC 2.3 all-wheel drive model, powered by the new EcoBoost I-4 engine delivering 285 horsepower and 305 lbs.-ft. torque. Mated to the same six-speed automatic transmission and also requiring regular unleaded fuel, it has an EPA fuel economy rating of 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway. While luxury and performance has always been a major component in the Lincoln DNA, the premium luxury division of Ford Motor Company is seeking to attract younger buyers moving into the luxury division — which also happens to be the fastest growing segment in the auto industry. I don’t know if I fit the company’s target demographic, but I’m absolutely smitten. The MKC is bold, elegant and performs like a champ. Just to name one thing, as you approach the vehicle the MKC recognizes the key fob on your person and responds by illuminating “welcome mats” on the ground next to both front doors with the Lincoln insignia. At the same time, the headlamps, taillights and door handles glow with soft lighting. Of course, you can also use the Lincoln app to remote start your vehicle and get it warm or cool before you need to leave. The MKC has so many features and I just don’t have the space to talk about them — so visit your nearest Lincoln dealer and take one for a test drive.
