Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Youngsters shine at Newland Parrish’s mark in the 400 meters highlights annual track meet By DON HUNT Mail Tribune Each time Dusty Parrish steps on the track to run a race, he pretends that giant spiders are lurking close behind. The Grants Pass sophomore is deathly afraid of the critters, and just the thought of them crawling nearby makes him run faster. Parrish must have imagined a basement full of black widows were on his heels as he took off on the 400-meter run during Friday’s sixth annual Bob Newland Invitational. Parrish sped around the track in 50.13 seconds to shatter the meet record by nearly two seconds and break the field record of 50.4. Advertisement Parrish’s time is also the fourth-fastest in the state this season. "I think I got away from them today," Parrish laughed as he slapped "high fives" with teammates and coaches after blowing away the field in the one-lap race. Parrish also won the 200 in 22.91 — the fastest time in the Southern Oregon Conference this spring — and anchored Grants Pass’ 4x400 relay team to victory in fueling the Caveman boys to the team title. Grants Pass amassed 81.25 points to easily top runner-up Henley, which scored 59.5. North Medford and Roseburg tied for third place with 55. On the girls’ side of the meet, Eagle Point freshman sensation Janna Boren won the 100, 200 and pole vault and anchored the Eagles’ 4x100 relay to second place. Boren personally accounted for 32 of Eagle Point’s 76 points, but South Medford edged out Henley for the team title, 86-85. What made Parrish’s 400-meter time so remarkable was that no one was within 15 meters of him when he crossed the finish line. Runner-up Clease Carlisle of South Medford was clocked in 53.4. "He (Parrish) ran the first 200 in 23.5, and that time would win most 200s," Grants Pass sprint coach Robert Lingo said. "I think that was the big key, getting out fast like he did. He blazed that first 200 and was able to sustain the second 200 pretty well." With slender arms and legs attached to a 6-foot, 150-pound physique, Parrish wouldn’t win many strongman contests. But he has deceptive strength on the track, thanks in part to his work on the cross country team last fall. "I think cross country really added to my endurance," Parrish said. "When I ran the 400 last year (in track), I always died the last part of the race. That’s not happening now." Parrish was expected to be third on GP’s loaded 400 list this season — behind junior Mark Stork and senior Justin Ruyle — but now finds himself No. 1. "He’s such a smooth runner that you don’t even hear him when he goes by," Grants Pass head coach Carl Sniffen said. "He has tremendous potential." So does Boren, the Eagle Point sprinter who won the 100 in 13.05, took the 200 in 26.8 and tied the meet record in the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet. Boren made a couple of strong attempts at 10-6 but couldn’t quite get over the bar. "This is the best I’ve felt on the runway this season," Boren said. "My speed is getting better." Boren’s feet have been in pain because of high arches, but Medford sports therapist Steve Zerkel fitted her with some orthopedics last week that has alleviated the problem. Crater sophomore Jake Keyser set a meet record in the 3,000, covering the 7½ -lap race in 9:12.40. His time shattered the previous meet mark of 9:18.8 set by Grants Pass’ Trevor Hanlin in 2002. Keyser also won the inaugural "Custance Mile" in 4:34.2. The event was held in honor of Perry Custance, a former South Medford standout who helped launch the Newland Invitational as part of his senior project in 2000. Custance died last summer. Keyser has run in the shadow of talented Crater teammates Isaac Stoutenburgh and Geoff Donaldson this season, but he had the stage to himself Friday. "I was hoping to set a PR (personal record), but I’ll take the meet record," said Keyser, who came within three seconds of his PR despite finishing 20 seconds in front of Mike Seus of St. Mary’s. Other notable performances came from Roseburg’s Adam Brink, who tied the meet record in the boys pole vault at 13-6, and from Crater’s Riley Swanson, who ran the girls’ 3,000 in 11:35.69. Some 468 athletes representing 17 schools participated in the meet.
