Man making pot extract charged with child neglect Monday Nov 20, 2017 at 2:22 PM Nov 20, 2017 at 5:16 PM Vickie Aldous Mail Tribune @VickieAldous A Medford man has been charged with first-degree child neglect after a neighbor called 911 to report a baby was in the street eating dirt and cigarette butts. Shawn David Munro, 26, of the 2300 block of East Barnett Road, was scheduled to be arraigned on the charge Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court. He failed to appear and a warrant was issued for his arrest, according to court records. On Sept. 3, a neighbor called authorities after seeing Munro near his car, which was parked along the street near his apartment, according to a probable cause affidavit. "Munro was reportedly dozing off, and his 11-month-old child was in the street eating dirt and cigarette butts," the affidavit said. Medford police officers responded and found Munro inside his apartment, along with about 17 butane bottles and concentrated marijuana oil, the affidavit said. Munro allegedly admitted he was making the marijuana concentrate and said he thought it was legal to do so, the affidavit said. In October, Munro was accused by a grand jury of first-degree child neglect for allegedly allowing a child to be in a premises where a cannabinoid extract was being processed without state licensing. Butane is a highly flammable liquid that can lead to fires and explosions. In February 2016, Brian Keith Sunkenberg, 53, had cans of butane in a Grants Pass trailer. The butane ignited, causing a massive explosion and fire. Sunkenberg and two children received second and third-degree burns, according to court documents. Earlier this month, Sunkenberg was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after he pleaded guilty to endangering human life by manufacturing marijuana in the form of hash oil. In January 2016, Troy Allen Wyatt, 44, caused an explosion that endangered his sleeping daughter and severely damaged a Medford garage. Wyatt, who suffered burns, was attempting to make a marijuana extract known as butane honey oil, according to prosecutors.
