St. Mary's trips Cascade for tourney title From staff reports ETNA, Calif . -- The St. Mary's softball team romped its way into the championship game of the Etna Tournament Saturday and found a familiar opponent in Cascade Christian. The Crusaders breezed into the championship game with a six-inning 22-1 win over Trinity then disposed of the Challengers for the second time in as many days, 7-1. St. Mary's beat Cascade Christian 6-4 on Friday. St. Mary's scored 20 of its 22 runs over the final three innings and took advantage of eight Trinity errors in the first game. "They (Trinity) had most of their errors in those last few innings," St. Mary's coach Robin Snider said. "We took advantage of their mistakes by getting some timely hits with people on base." Kelley Monroe carried the big stick for St. Mary's with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBIs. Lani Brophy, Shasta DeArmond and Annie Maurer also knocked in two runs apiece for the Crusaders. In the finale, Brophy limited Cascade Christian to two hits and struck out seven while going the distance. "She threw well for us," Snider said. "We played good defense behind her and kept runners out of scoring position. That was the key." Brophy also had a big day at the plate with two hits and three RBIs. Teammate Kim Hansen went 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs as the Crusaders broke open a tight game with a three-run fifth-inning. St. Mary's improved to 5-0 on the season while Cascade Christian dropped to 3-2. Miranda Gillaspie held the Pelicans to four hits in the first game and helped her cause with a game-winning two-run double. Heidi Brookshire had two hits to lead Klamath Union (0-3), while Jessica Ball also picked up two hits in the nightcap. Ross had six strikeouts and only one walk, while Michelle McEvoy, Jeanetta Hudnall and Kendra Kohler each had two hits for the Pirates (2-0). Beth Nikodym had a leadoff single and scored on an RBI single by Sutton Jackson to give Phoenix a 1-0 lead in the fourth. The Pirates added two more runs in the fifth, with McEvoy slapping an RBI double to score Kohler and Ross adding an RBI single. MARY'S 9-9, ETNA 10-5 -- At Etna, Calif., St. Mary's staged late-inning comebacks during its doubleheader split with Etna. The Crusaders trailed 7-0 in the opener before rallying for nine runs in the last two innings to take a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Etna picked up the win with a two-out single with an 0-2 count and took advantage of eight Crusader errors. A.J. Schultz led St. Mary's at the plate with three hits while Brandon Frankel added two. St. Mary's once again trailed in the nightcap but used a five-run seventh to put the game away. Ryan Fetty, Jon Bergstrom and Tracy Terrel each hit RBI doubles to spark the rally. Neal Governor and Bergstrom each went 3-for-4 while Fetty added two hits. Klamath Union's bats came alive in the nightcap, with Jeff Mortenson drilling a three-run homer and accounting for four RBIs. Jason Mortenson and Brandon Burke each added two hits and two RBIs for the Pelicans (1-3), while Mike Mitchell had two RBIs. KU starter Jason Kesling lost a no-hit bid in the fourth and allowed only one hit before giving way to Nick Caleb in the fifth inning. Tennis REDDING, Calif. -- Despite having four freshmen and two sophomores in its lineup, the Ashland High tennis team mauled a pair of Redding teams. The Grizzlies won every match on its swing to Northern California, rolling to a 9-0 win over Shasta High Friday and coming back with a 9-0 victory over Enterprise High on Saturday. Junior Aaron Harris looked impressive at No. 1 singles as he breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Shasta's Josh Grossman and a 6-0, 6-2 win over Enterprise's Ryan Childs. "It's surprising to play these two teams and not even drop a match, considering how young we are," Ashland coach Dick Streng said. "But we got the job done."
