Photo by Jim Craven On a team loaded with good pitching, South Medford High's Matt Skundrick put in his bid as one of the best Tuesday at Miles Field. Skundrick fired a one-hit shutout and struck out nine to lead the Panthers to a 7-0 victory over Crescent Valley of Corvallis in the Asante Diamond Classic. Not to be outdone, Tony Conklin fashioned a three-hit shutout later in the day as the Panthers cruised to a 3-0 victory over South Eugene. The two wins improved South's record to 3-1. "Skundrick has had the potential to do well but now he's grown up and it shows," South Medford coach Pete Whisler said of the 6-foot-1, 170-pound junior right-hander. "He's gotten bigger and stronger and he's about half-cocky. He won't give in to anybody." Shortstop Brett Haag and sophomore second baseman Matt Smith made a couple of nice plays in the field to help preserve the shutout for Skundrick. South Medford took an early lead by scoring twice in the second inning. Walks to Conklin, Jimmie Maddox and Chris Empio loaded the bases. One batter later Mel Shine reached on an error, scoring Conklin, and David Thrapp followed with an RBI groundout. In the win over South Eugene, the Panthers turned three double plays to assist Conklin. South took a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Skundrick in the second and Josh Tompkins delivered a two-run single in the fifth. W -- Conklin (1-1). L -- Radevich. NORTH MEDFORD TAKES TWO -- sophomore pitcher Brent Kircher continued to baffle hitters in his second start for North Medford. The left-hander followed up his no-hitter against Marshfield with another stellar performance against Oregon City. The Tornado blanked Crescent Valley, 9-0, in the late game to move to 4-0 in the Asante Diamond Classic. Kircher allowed two second-inning hits and an unearned run as North Medford pounded the Pioneers, 11-1, in five innings. Kircher retired the final 10 batters he faced. In 10 innings this spring, he has allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked one. Charlie Jensen lashed two hits, drove in three runs and scored one for the Tornado. Josh Bottjer was 2-for-3 and scored once. Kenny Halpin had one hit in three at-bats, but scored three times, stole three bases and drove in a run. Against Crescent Valley, Nate Mayben struck out 10 and walked four to earn his second win for North. Sean Backstrom finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Phil Ouellette was 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored a run and Evan McArthur added two hits. CRATER 16-18, MARSHFIELD 0-3 --At Coos Bay, reigning Southern Oregon Conference player of the year Brent Foster went 6-for-6 on the day with two doubles and a monstrous home run in Crater's sweep. Foster's homer, a two-run shot in the fourth inning of the second game, cleared the 385-foot fence in right field and ricocheted off another fence about 20 feet further out. Foster was also the winning pitcher in Game 1, limiting Marshfield to three hits and no runs through six innings. P.J. Pardee pitched a scoreless seventh. Jeremiah Toews and Ryan Gipson each had three hits in the first game, with Gipson clubbing a solo homer. K.J. Chubb held Marshfield to four hits in Game 2 and registered a home run and two RBIs. LAKE OSWEGO 3, ASHLAND 1 --Nick Ehlers and Ryan Decker held Lake Oswego to four hits and no earned runs, but five Grizzly errors enabled the Lakers to walk off with the win at the Ashland tournament. Ashland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Nate Monosoff singled home Noah Hartzell, who doubled to openthe inning and advanced on Bill Rowe's single. EAGLE POINT 6-1, SILVERTON 4-0 --At Eagle Point, Nick Newmann scattered eight hits to win the first game and Jesse Stevenson fired a three-hit shutout in the nightcap as Eagle Point swept Silverton. Stevenson, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound right-hander, registered nine strikeouts and just three weeks as he baffled the Silver Foxes with a wicked curveball. Eagle Point pushed across the only run it would need in the first inning of the second game when Scott Stockton walked, advanced to second and third on an error and scored on Ryan Garrett's double. In the opening game, Evan Pogue went 2-for-2, scored two runs, stole two bases and had a pair of RBIs. Newmann struck out seven and walked three in going the distance. Roberts sparked an eight-run second with a two-run shot, the first of his three hits on the day, and Newfield capped off a six-run surge in the fourth with his round-tripper. Blake McCormick and Brian Edwards each added three hits for the Challengers and Aaron Beamish picked up the win with six strikeouts in four innings.
