Nelson shines for SOU tennis REDDING, Calif. � Julie Nelson remained unbeaten in singles and doubles competition as the Southern Oregon University women�s tennis team coasted to a 9-0 victory over Shasta Community College on Saturday. Nelson, a junior from Grants Pass, picked up a default victory in singles and then teamed with her sister, Shannon, to defeat Kelly Carter and Cara West, 8-5. The victory over the Knights improved SOU�s season record to 7-0. The Raiders play host to George Fox today at 11:30 a.m. "The competition is going to get tougher from here on out," SOU coach Gail Patton said. SINGLES � Katie Fankhanel, SOU, dec. Track and Field BRUCE DRUMMOND INVITATIONAL � At Sacramento, Calif., with only one week of practice under her belt, Tiwanna Merritt still came through for the Raiders in their second meet of the season on Saturday. Merritt, a starting guard on the women�s basketball team, placed second in the 200 meters in a time of 25.54 seconds and third in the 100 at 12.42. She also anchored the 4x100 relay team to second place at 49.79 with Andrea Eide, Kena Page and Laura Lincoln and anchored the 4x400 team to second at 4:09 with Page, Lincoln and Lindsey Hikade. Justin Bennett won the men�s hammer at 153-4. Nicole Robertson improved her top mark in the discus and qualified for the national meet by placing second with a throw of 140 feet. Also placing second were Jeff Bentley in the javelin (193-11), freshman Nick Dunn in the 400 intermediate hurdles (50.24) and Colby Stone in the men�s long jump (19-6�). Joe Sheire earned third-place marks in the high hurdles (15.93) and intermediate hurdles (56.52), while Jon Opelt was third in the men�s 3,000 steeplechase (10:26.76). The men�s 4x400 relay team of Dunn, Danny Hanes, Cailen McNair and Eric McKenzie also placed third at 3:20.14.
