Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 11, 2006 Meth-dealing suspect faces forgery charges An alleged methamphetamine dealer faced additional charges Monday in connection with a counterfeiting ring. James Michael Monroe, 34, appeared Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court on charges of delivering and possessing meth, first-degree forgery and resisting arrest. He remained in the Jackson County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Medford police had to break down the door of a west Medford apartment to arrest Monroe Thursday night after a week’s search during which the suspect evaded capture. Monroe and Michael James Curtis, 32, are charged with using home computers and a printer-copier to manufacture 10-, 20- and 50-dollar bills. Curtis was arrested in a March 29 raid on the Midway Road home where he lives. The two are suspected of giving the forged currency to drug dealers who exchanged meth with them before passing the bills on to gas stations, convenience stores and banks throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California. Police almost caught up to Monroe during a March 31 drug raid at a Central Point motel, where he allegedly left behind new counterfeiting tools. Officers finally apprehended the 250-pound man on Thursday at an apartment on West 10th Street after getting a tip that he was staying there while the apartment’s resident was in jail. Advertisement When police tried to unlock the door with a key from the apartment complex manager, Monroe jammed a large knife into the door frame to prevent them from coming in. Monroe tried to hold the entrance closed with his body, but police knocked the door down with a battering ram, said Medford police Lt. Mike Moran. Monroe previously has served time in prison for drug and identity-theft convictions, court records show. At least 10 people have been arrested on a variety of charges in connection with this case over the past two weeks, police said.
