Merfeld, 64, passed away with his family by his side Tuesday, November 10, 2015, after a tragic fall. Don was born February 28, 1951 to Paul Joseph Merfeld and Eunice Carol Putman in Medford Ore. Don graduated from Eureka High School in 1969 and Humboldt State College in 1973 with a degree in political science. He moved to Washington D.C. and worked for Senators Mark Hatfield and Alan Cranston. Don eventually moved back to the west coast and sold real estate in Sacramento CA before finally moving back to his hometown of Medford. He owned Expo Deli Market for 10 years before ending up in his career at Albertsons in Ashland. In 1993, after six months of correspondence, Don traveled to the Philippines where he met the love of his life, Merced Glino. He fell in love with Mercy, her wonderful family and the country. Don and Mercy were married in 1993 in Telegrafo, Tolosa, Leyte, Philippines. He loved to go to the Philippines and visit with his wife’s family, which he did 10 times in their 22 years of marriage. In his earlier years, Don loved scuba diving in Hawaii. Don had a unique sense of humor, never met a stranger, and loved to dress up for Halloween and see all the kids. In the last few years he spent a lot of time helping his widowed mother. Don is survived by his wife Mercy of Medford; his brothers, Gerald Merfeld (Linda) of Medford and Steve Merfeld (Michelle) of Eugene; his sisters, Paula Merfeld of Phoenix Ariz. and Carol Merfeld (Roz) of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews here and in the Philippines. There will be graveside service at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland, officiated by Fr. Martin of Sacred Heart Church.
