The trail stretch, which runs from the park's northern boundary to its junction with the Lightning Springs Trail, reopened Monday. It had been closed since mid-August while crews worked to contain the National Creek fire complex, located near the park's northwest boundary and on some Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest lands. Some rain and cooler temperatures in the Friday night and Saturday morning gave firefighters an advantage. "The weather we had over the weekend has definitely helped," said Marcia McCabe, Crater Lake spokeswoman. The lightning-sparked complex, which flared up Aug. 1, had grown to 15,091 acres Monday, and was 60 percent contained following successful burnout operations along the park's north entrance road. Most of the complex's acreage belongs to the Crescent fire. The National fire has stayed put at 120 acres for several days. Full containment on the fires is expected by Sept. 11. "The fire environment has changed and will remain subdued for the next 7 to 10 days," a message on the Incident Information System wildfire tracking website said. "Pockets of fire activity will still remain but have limited impact on visitors and surrounding communities." Park officials said smoke problems have mostly cleared up. "It's gorgeous. I don't know how the conditions are on the fire, but it's gorgeous here," McCabe said. The Boundary Springs, Bald Crater Loop and Bert Creek Trail remain closed inside the park. All other roads and facilities inside the park are open. "I think it's kind of wait and see," McCabe said of the closed trails. "They're kind of in the middle of the fire area, so it may be a while."
