What's it's function? -- Don M., Ashland Everything else is communication equipment, Don, but that globe you saw is a giant moonball that turns the slopes of Mount Ashland into a luminous disco after the winter sun sets. OK, we kid big-time. That globe, which looks to us more like a large golf ball, is actually just a special covering for a large rotating dish device inside that provides the region's Doppler weather radar images. It's one of dozens of similar devices located all across the country. You can see the images it produces at www.wrh.noaa.gov/mfr by clicking on the map-like image on the bottom left of that page. The images are pretty tame right now, but in a few weeks they'll light up like a Christmas tree as the winter's storms roll through on a regular basis. The radar maps are clickable, allowing you to zoom in pretty close to see where precipitation is falling relative to local cities and land features.
