Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 29, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 29, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 29, 1915 Editorial: WATER SUPPLY ENDANGERED The Mail Tribune does not want to appear in the role of obstructor or discourager of enterprise, but it desires to call the attention of the public to the fact that the purity of Medford's water supply is endangered by the building of a dam at Fish Lake. The dam is needed to impound water for irrigation purposes, but some provision should be made at once to safeguard the city's water supply, for the impounded water will not be fit for drinking purposes unless a filtering system is utilized. When the previous dam existed, analysis of the water showed it was impregnated with typhoid and other bacilli. It could not be otherwise. The reservoir and basin drainage area has been used as cattle pasture for half a century. All the debris of countless herds as well as the decaying vegetation of the forests will be drained into the lake, to decompose and find its way into Medford stomachs. Some method must be provided to keep Medford's water pure, and should be provided by those causing its spoliation. Now is the time for action, before the damage has been done. If Medford calmly watches without protest the ruin of its water supply, in which it has invested nearly half a million dollars, it will lose its right of protest after the ruin has been wrought. SMOKING PARLOR FOR OLD LADIES ST. PAUL — A silent group of gray-haired women, some of them grandmothers and some great-grandmothers, resting easily in comfortable rocking chairs with thin blue ribbons of smoke rising from their meerschaum and calabash pipes, will be one of the modernisms at the new $150,000 women's building now in process of completion at the Ramsey county poor farm. For the old ladies to have an elaborate smoking room fitted in modern style and, said Mrs. Albert Moore, wife of the farm superintendent, with a smile today, "If the old dears want the walls covered with pictures of race horses, prizefighters and baseball players, they may have them." "When we took a poll of the old ladies regarding the establishment for smoking," she continued, "there was hardly a dissenting vote." "We shall furnish the tobacco."
