Catching up with the Avengers By Christopher Lawrence The Las Vegas Review-Journal MailTribune.com By Christopher Lawrence The Las Vegas Review-Journal Posted Apr. 30, 2015 @ 9:27 am By Christopher Lawrence The Las Vegas Review-Journal Posted Apr. 30, 2015 @ 9:27 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> With this many characters, it’s going to be tough to keep up with everything going on in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” On the difficulty scale, it ought to rank somewhere between deciphering what Disney’s upcoming “Tomorrowland” is about and pretending to be excited about next year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Along with the usual suspects — Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye — and their wrangler, Nick Fury, there are enough heroes for another movie or three. There’s the metal-suited War Machine (Don Cheadle), who took on a bigger role in “Iron Man 3,” and the gun-slinging former military paratrooper The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), who was introduced in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” You’ve got Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), last seen applying for work at Stark Industries at the end of “Winter Soldier,” and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard), last seen acting crazy pants in “Thor: The Dark World.” And then there are newcomers Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). The latter shouldn’t be confused with the Quicksilver who was in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” even though it’s technically the same character. With that in mind, the last thing you need to worry about when you head to the movies this weekend is the main characters’ backstories. So, whether it’s a refresher or a tutorial, here’s a look at what The Avengers have been up to since “The Avengers”: NICK FURY Portrayed by: Samuel L. Jackson Alter ego: Nicholas J. Fury Day job: Former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Since “The Avengers”: Persuaded the World Security Council to implement Project Insight, three helicarriers capable of eliminating 1,000 hostiles a minute. … Ambushed and shot multiple times by HYDRA operatives working within S.H.I.E.L.D. … Faked his own death after being left with a lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, collapsed lung and “one hell of a headache.” … Set fire to every part of his life as Nick Fury, including his eyepatch. Last seen: Visiting his grave before heading to Europe to take out some remaining HYDRA agents. IRON MAN Portrayed by: Robert Downey Jr. Alter ego: Tony Stark Day job: Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist Since “The Avengers”: Suffered from nightmares, insomnia and anxiety attacks. … Used those sleepless nights to create an army of Iron Man suits that can function independently. … Was inside his Malibu, Calif., mansion as it was destroyed. … Had the shrapnel surrounding his heart surgically removed and threw the arc reactor and electromagnet that had been keeping him alive into the ocean. Last seen: Telling all of his problems to Dr. Bruce Banner. CAPTAIN AMERICA Portrayed by: Chris Evans Alter ego: Steve Rogers Day job: National treasure Since “The Avengers”: Spent time catching up on 70 years of pop culture. … Grew more and more disillusioned with his work for S.H.I.E.L.D. … Befriended veterans advocate Sam Wilson aka The Falcon. … Branded a fugitive and went on the run with Black Widow. … Along with Black Widow, discovered HYDRA’s infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. … Visited with an elderly Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). … Fought the Winter Soldier, then sought to help him once Cap realized he was his old, presumed-dead friend Bucky (Sebastian Stan). Last seen: Setting off with The Falcon to look for Bucky. THOR Portrayed by: Chris Hemsworth Alter ego: Thor Odinson Day job: Asgardian god of thunder Since “The Avengers”: Spent the aftermath of the Battle of New York restoring order to the Nine Realms. “Wars were raging. Marauders were pillaging. I had to put an end to the slaughter.” … Brought his beloved Jane (Natalie Portman) to Asgard. … Saw his mother, Frigga (Rene Russo), killed by the Dark Elf Malekith. …Teamed with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to avenge her. … Saved the Nine Realms yet again while destroying a large swath of London. Last seen: Bifrosting back to England for a makeout session with Jane. HULK Portrayed by: Mark Ruffalo Alter ego: Dr. Bruce Banner Day job: Nuclear physicist Since “The Avengers”: Mentioned as a potential target of Project Insight. … Credited as the inventor of Tetrodotoxine B, which allowed Fury to fake his own death. Last seen: Apologizing for having dozed off while listening to Tony Stark’s problems. “I’m sorry, I’m not that kind of doctor. … I don’t have the temperament.” BLACK WIDOW Portrayed by: Scarlett Johansson Alter ego: Natasha Romanoff Day job: Spy/assassin Since “The Avengers”: Conducted black ops missions for S.H.I.E.L.D. … Along with Captain America, discovered HYDRA’s infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. … Swapped banter and spit with Cap while on the run from HYDRA. … Along with Cap and Falcon, brought down Project Insight. … Uploaded all of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s secrets to the Internet. … Forced to testify on Capitol Hill. Last seen: Preparing to lie low. “I blew all my covers. I gotta go figure out a new one.” HAWKEYE Portrayed by: Jeremy Renner Alter ego: Clint Barton Day job: Spy/master archer Since “The Avengers”: Who knows? He wasn’t mentioned even in passing in “Iron Man 3,” “Dark World” or “Winter Soldier.” He could have been teaching little girls to shoot arrows at “Hunger Games”-themed birthday parties. He could have been a masked luchador in Mexico. He could have been Deadmau5. We just don’t know. Last seen: Eating shawarma at the end of “The Avengers.” By Christopher Lawrence The Las Vegas Review-Journal MailTribune.com By Christopher Lawrence The Las Vegas Review-Journal Posted Apr. 30, 2015 @ 9:27 am » Comment or view comments /* $( document ).ready(function() { // Jquery mobile is trying to style the button and leaving a blank gry button on top of a white button $("#viafouracoms .vf-comment-controls li.vf-right").html(' Submit '); });*/ » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
