A large oak tree that fell into the river last week has lodged itself in the main boating channel just downstream from what is commonly called the McGraw Hole. "It's like somebody dropped a concrete wall in the river," said Sgt. Shawn Richards from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department's marine program. "It's right square in the middle of the river channel." Marine patrol crews have cut away the branches, but the main tree trunk and root wad remain, Richards said. They likely will stay there until high water moves them downstream, he said. Until then, driftboaters can either traverse a channel to the far left of the hazard, or maneuver their boats between the root wad and the right bank, he said. "We'll start whittling on it some more next week," Richards said. That particular stretch of the upper Rogue is one of the most dynamic. The river sweeps through a large S-like pattern before rushing through heaps of gravel that create new boating paths almost every winter. Upper Rogue boating in mid-January is almost exclusively an activity for steelhead anglers in driftboats or small, one-person rafts. Richards said he definitely wants to get the hazard out of the way before the summer rafting and inflatable kayak floating season begins.
