At about 4:30 a.m. an alarm summoned police to Pacific Diamond Jewelers, 2 N. Central Ave., police Lt. Tim George said. Officers found that someone had thrown a large rock through the glass door at the store, smashed jewelry cases inside and made off with "a significant amount of jewelry," George said. "It was a classic smash-and-grab," he said. "They were in and out in less than five minutes." The jewel thief was gone when police arrived to search the business and surrounding area. However, officers found blood at the scene with all the shattered glass. Detectives collected evidence Thursday and followed up on leads they found. The investigation continues. Police said the store, which was open for business as usual Thursday, was still working on an inventory to determine the total value of the loss. Among the items taken were diamond tennis bracelets from a case that was broken, necklaces and earrings, along with jewelry display holders, George said. George said jewelry stores aren't common burglary targets because people know the businesses have security cameras and alarm systems. Would you like to respond to this story?
