Prep roundup Mustangs fend off Mazama, 10-7 KLAMATH FALLS -- Hidden Valley controlled the first 3 quarters of a crucial Skyline Conference football game on Friday night. Then the Mazama Vikings put on a late surge that fell short when Chad Hickel missed a game-tying 35-yard field goal attempt and the sixth-ranked Mustangs escaped with a 10-7 victory. The win puts the Mustangs in a commanding position to repeat as Skyline Conference champions. Hidden Valley needs one win in its final two games to clinch the title. Both teams entered the contest undefeated in conference action. When a long Hidden Valley drive stalled on the Mazama 3-yard line, Andy Sakraida kicked a 20-yard field goal to give the Mustangs a 10-0 lead with 6:26 remaining in the game. That kick proved decisive in the Mustangs recording their 12th straight conference victory. At that point, Mazama had run only four plays and had one first down in the second half. Mazama started at its own 44 after a squib kickoff and drove 56 yards in 14 plays, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Willie Wallace. The Vikings then recovered an onside kick at the Mustangs' 49 with 2:15 left. Mazama marched to the Mustangs' 8, but Hickel's 35-yard field goal went wide left with seconds remaining. Hidden Valley took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a trick play. Curtis Howell replaced Tim Orr at running back and took a pitchout that looked like an end sweep. But Howell stopped and found a wide open Ryan Wilson for a 66-yard scoring play. Hidden Valley totaled 154 yards on the ground, with Orr picking up 136 on 35 carries. The Mustangs added 128 yards through the air. Mazama had 230 total yards. Rogue River's Jarrod Garwood hit Joe Warsaw for a 15-yard touchdown pass that gave the Chieftains a 6-3 lead in the first period, but the host Honkers then ran off 23 straight points to take command. The Chieftains had a 392-372 edge in total offense but fumbled the ball away six times and also suffered an interception. Lakeview lost the ball just twice, both times on fumbles.
