Rather, it has bred contemporaries of a truly competitive nature in wrestling rivals Rob Folsom of North Medford and Christian Mannenbach of Eagle Point. The two 160-pounders met in the finals of the Eagle Point Invitational Saturday, Folsom eking out a 5-2 victory in their individual duel, but Mannenbach enjoying the fruits of the Eagles’ title in the 13-team event. The two, who are ranked in the top four in the state at the weight, are anything but strangers. It was only two nights earlier in a dual meet that Folsom recorded a 6-3 triumph in a match that was tied with a minute to go. "I’ve wrestled Christian so many times, it seems like it’s every other week," says Folsom, the defending Southern Oregon Conference champion who is ranked second. "We’ve become good friends. Every Saturday (at tournaments) we hang out for six hours in the warm-up room understanding that we’ll wrestle each other in the finals." Folsom’s win did little to derail Eagle Point as it churned out 361 team points, more than doubling runner-up Clackamas (164.5). Mazama was third at 151, South Medford fourth at 150.5, Cascade fifth at 146 and North Medford sixth at 123.5. The Eagles won seven of the 14 weight divisions, including six of the first seven finals bouts. They got pins by J.P. Sheile at 119 and Andrew Larsen at 135, and a major decision from Chris Doran at 103. In the closest match of the championships, Eagle Point’s Stephen Price was awarded the decision at 140 pounds in a match that ended 5-5. In sudden-death overtime, Nic Demaris of Cascade was unable to escape from the down position in the 30 seconds allotted. Nevertheless, the most anticipated match was the latest rematch of Mannenbach, a senior who is ranked fourth despite being sidelined the first part of the season by a shoulder injury, and the junior Folsom. "It’s always a low-scoring match and tight to the end with a lot of suspense," said Mannenbach. The only points of the first period were a takedown by Folsom. In the second, he escaped and got a takedown to build a 5-0 lead, a margin that seems insurmountable when these two tangle. "We know each other’s moves, strengths and strategies so well, it’s hard to do anything," said Folsom. "Plus, he’s really strong, and he’s a good wrestler." Meanwhile, Price’s victory over Demaris followed a similar pattern. There was no score until 40 seconds remained in the second period, when Demaris, ranked third in Class 3A, recorded a takedown for a 2-0 lead. Those points would factor into the sudden death. As the end of regulation neared, Price escaped for a 5-4 lead, but he lost the advantage when he illegally locked his hands around Demaris, giving the latter the tying point. Neither managed to score in the one-minute overtime, although two near takedowns by Price were nullified when both wrestlers left the ring. In sudden death, Demaris had the option of choosing the up or down position because he scored the first points of the match. He chose down, and had to escape in 30 seconds to win. Price didn’t let Demaris go and got the win, his first in sudden death since youth competition, he said. "I kept reminding myself," said Price, "that I’m in a lot better shape, that I work harder and that I deserve it more than he does." Sheile, who pinned Josh Sou of Clackamas in 1:23, hardly appeared headed in that direction at the outset. He was caught in a head-and-arm and thrown to his back seconds into the match, the resulting near fall putting him in a 5-0 hole. "I have a thing for them," he joked of the maneuver used against him. It didn’t take him long to reverse Sou and earn the fall. "Coach has us practice on how to get off our backs," said Sheile. "I learned to put my arm through and bridge rather than just lay there." Eagle Point coach Brad McBee could find little fault with his wrestlers’ performances. It was a sign the Eagles had recovered from a grueling three-week stretch that ended two weeks ago. "Our kids were worn down, mentally and physically," said McBee. "Now, it looks like we’re re-energized and refocused. That’s what you like to see. We’re coming back up." And it couldn’t come at a better time for them. The Eagles host the SOC district meet in two weeks.
