Smith, Merkley spar in debate Candidates for U.S. Senate tussle over local issues, economy and more Despite a little reflection on the negativity of the campaign, U.S. Senate candidates Jeff Merkley and Gordon Smith didn't waste any time taking jabs at each other during their second and final debate held Monday night in Medford. "I regret the tone of the campaign," said Smith, the Republican incumbent, toward the end of the one-hour television question-and-answer session on KOBI. "Jeff Merkley is a good person and I'm a good person, too." Merkley, a Democrat, said he would like to end the constant negative advertisements and expressed a willingness to run more positive ads. But Merkley also suggested that Smith's campaign is being influenced by Karl Rove, who helped President Bush win two terms in the White House. Smith responded, "Karl Rove doesn't have anything to do with my campaign." Smith, running for a third term, and Merkley, who is speaker of the House in the Oregon Legislature, answered questions from Mail Tribune Editor Bob Hunter, Grants Pass Daily Courier Editor Dennis Roler, KOBI anchor Audrey Kuchen, and Patsy Smullin, president and owner of California Oregon Broadcasting, the parent company of KOBI. The debate focused on the economy, the environment and a federal program that pumps dollars into counties that have seen a sharp reduction in timber harvests. Some of the four panelists attempted to get Smith and Merkley to respond to a question about an issue without including any reference to their opponent. During the debate, Smith made frequent reference to his ability to work both sides of the political aisle. He often cited his ability to work with Sen. Ron Wyden, his Democratic counterpart representing Oregon. He said he also has taken on Bush on several issues over the years and has worked with Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee for president. But Merkley said he has been endorsed by Wyden. "Sen. Wyden needs a partner in Jeff Merkley," he said. Merkley said Smith has voted with Bush 90 percent of the time. He reiterated his opposition to the $700 billion bailout even after the rebound on Wall Street Monday, saying he wanted to see more oversight over federal regulatory branches. "This bill was poorly done," he said. Smith said he wasn't for either more or less regulation, but better regulation in general and said he supported the bailout also because it included a four-year reauthorization of the county payments program. Both candidates said they wanted to do more to promote greater timber harvesting as a way to beef up the state's economy. Smith said 8 billion board feet were harvested during the 1980s, which he thought was too much. As opposed to his opponent, Smith said he wants to create a timber industry that will offer more jobs to Oregonians. "Jeff was born in Myrtle Creek but it didn't take him long to forget where he came from," he said. Merkley said that as a son of a logger, he does think a sustainable forest harvest is important for the economy. He said that both Bush and Smith have caused the state to lose 12,000 jobs in the timber industry. Merkley said he's opposed to Smith's plan to privatize Social Security, which he said would have been a dangerous move considering how hard retirement funds have been hit by the falling stock market. "It would have melted away the way Wall Street has melted away," he said. Smith said that as senator he has done more to help encourage Americans to save more as a way to better prepare for retirement and add to the benefits received under Social Security. He took issue with Merkley for suggesting he wanted to do away with Social Security. "In war and the Merkley campaign, the truth is the first casualty," he said. At times during the debate, Smith or Merkley would acknowledge their opponent had done something right. Mekley said he supported the removal of hydroelectric dams on a case-by-case basis to help ensure better fish runs throughout Oregon. He said Smith was involved in removing Savage Rapids Dam near Rogue River. Smith pointed out that Savage Rapids wasn't a hydroelectric dam, then continued to say hydroelectric dams were the economic backbone of the state. "I have defended those dams and I will continue to defend them," he said. On crime, Smith said his opponent has opposed stiffer laws against gang crimes, rapists and child sex offenders. "When I look at Jeff Merkley's stance on crime, I'm appalled," he said. Merkley responded, "Shame on you, Gordon Smith, for portraying that series of lies." He said Smith took things he said or did out of context, and he affirmed that he has worked hard in the state Legislature to get better laws on the books to deal with criminals.
