Let’s face it, in 50 years of continuous production and 9 million models sold, the Mustang is one of the most iconic nameplates in automotive history. That said, the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang is, without question, the best Mustang ever. This four-seat, rear-wheel drive Pony car will take your breath away. The design team hit a homerun on both the exterior and interior designs. While designed from a blank sheet of paper, they stayed true to the Mustang DNA. I have to admit, I’ve always been partial to the fastback, and more than once, I caught myself whistling the theme song to “Bullitt” as I cruised around town. It’s a head turner. It’s a game changer. Available in fastback or convertible body styles, this is the first Mustang ever available in a choice of three engines — all producing more than 300 horsepower. There is the base 3.7-liter V-6 that generates 300 horsepower and 280 pounds-foot torque. Mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shifters, it requires regular unleaded gasoline and has an EPA fuel economy rating of 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway (automatic transmission). Then there is the choice of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine that delivers 310 horsepower and 320 p torque. Also requiring regular unleaded gasoline and available with the same transmission options, it has an EPA fuel economy rating of 21 mpg city, 32 mpg highway (automatic transmission). If you really want to let the ponies run, there is the 5.0-liter V-8 that produces an extremely responsive 435 horsepower and 400 pounds-foot torque. The ride and handling characteristics are absolutely superb. The suspension team also knocked it out of the park with the new suspension. Not only does it help the 5.0s 435 horses hug the road, it also provides additional head and shoulder room for rear seat passengers. And, I absolutely love the new instrumentation. It is intuitive, easy to read and, thanks to the Ford Sync AppLink system, highly connected to the world. It also includes more safety features than any Mustang that came before — more airbags, a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control, etc. I have zero complaints and lot of praise for the new Mustang. I do have one request, though. Since my test vehicle was the Mustang 5.0 fastback, I really need to drive the convertible. Everyone should take the new Mustang for a test drive.
