RiverDogs split with Eugene squad EUGENE - The Southern Oregon RiverDogs needed just one big inning to get past the Eugene Blue Sox on Saturday. The RiverDogs scored six runs on seven hits in a decisive second inning to defeat the Blue Sox 8-1 in Game 2 of an Amateur baseball doubleheader. The Blue Sox won the opener 10-6 as Shawn Dunaway and Mike Gaffney combined for five RBIs. In the nightcap, the RiverDogs (17-17) began the second inning slowly. Although Mike Newmann led off with a single, K.C. Rumrey hit into a double-play on the ensuing hit-and-run attempt. With two outs the RiverDogs initiated their assault. Don Jenkins and Charlie Jensen hit back-to-back doubles, scoring two runs. Steve DeClerck then proceeded to hit a two-run home run and Andy Bartels followed DeClerck's blast with an RBI triple. Ryan Wilson hit an RBI double and Newmann came up for the second time in the inning and hit another single. Blue Sox starting pitcher David Mulville was pulled in favor of Jason Hogganf after facing his 10th batter of the inning. Hogganf was able to get the final out of the inning without giving up any more runs but the damage was done. Brendan Holmes wouldn't require any more support as he went the distance allowing only one run on five hits while fanning five. DeClerck went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Newmann had three baseknocks while Jenkins and Jensen combined to go 4-for-8. Softball BLUE ACES ELIMINATED FROM NATIONALS - At McAllen, Texas, the South Medford Blue Aces U16 fastpitch softball team had their run in the national tournament come to a close on Saturday. The Blue Aces, which won the opening game but dropped Game 2, finished ninth out of 40 teams with a record of 6-2. "I'm real proud of these girls," said South Medford coach Doc Chaplan. "Of the 14 girls on the team, 11 were 14 years old. So to do as well as we did at an age 16 tournament is just fantastic." In the opening game, the Blue Aces rode the arm of Darci Byrne to a 1-0 win over the Fresno, Calif., Rage. Byrne went the distance, striking out 10 and limiting the Rage to just four hits. Jonni Byrne went 2-for-3 and provided the lone run for South Medford with an RBI double in the third inning. South Medford was eliminated in Game 2 in a 3-0 loss to The Rage from Arizona. The Blue Aces loaded the bases three times against the Rage but couldn't come up with the big hit.
