Mavericks trounce Phoenix TALENT The Medford Mavericks used a perfect combination of pitching and hitting to sweep a doubleheader from Phoenix in American Legion A baseball Sunday. The Mavericks (6-6, 4-2 league) spanked 26 hits in the double dip and allowed only one big inning to Phoenix in earning the sweep. Medford broke the first game open with a six-run second inning as the Mavericks notched seven of their 12 hits in the stanza. Dustin Butler singled to lead off the frame, followed by a Tyler Engle single and a two-run triple by Shad Thomas. J.C. Rowley kept the momentum up with a single and advanced to second when Chris Brewington drew a walk. After a fielders choice advanced both runners, Brett Timmerman laced an RBI single and Rob Folsom added a two-run single. Devin Zupan capped the inning with an RBI single. Thomas went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases to pace the Mavericks in Game 1, while Folsom was 3-for-4 with two rbis and 2 stolen bases. Rowley chipped in two hits, one RBI and two stolen bases. In the second game, Phoenix scored five runs in the fifth but that wasnt enough to offset eight errors and 14 Maverick hits. Joe Morris paced Medford by going 4-for-5 with two rbis and a stolen base, while Timmerman and Russ Vandell each added three hits.
