Not bad for spending most of the game either on defense or on the bench. Jaime Escobedo made the most of his minutes on the field Thursday afternoon, leading Phoenix to a 5-0 rout of Illinois Valley in Skyline Conference play. The senior didn’t waste any time, scoring in the eighth minute from 18 yards out on an assist by Uriel Castillo. Twenty minutes after his first goal, Escobedo stole an Illinois Valley pass, dribbled upfield and scored from 14 yards out to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead. "He is definitely a college-level player," Flenner said. "But more importantly, he has a great supporting staff around him." Advertisement With a comfortable 4-0 lead at the half, Phoenix’s reserves received considerable playing time and Escobedo went to the bench. But as time wound down, Flenner gave his defensive players a chance to shine. That’s when Escobedo found starting goalkeeper John Rowden from 6 yards out to push the score to 5-0. In the 24th minute, Albero Gonzales found Castillo inside the box for a chip-shot goal. Just before the half, Mario Alcauter scored on an assist by Julio Uribe. Phoenix (5-1, 4-0 Skyline) bombarded the Cougars with 36 shots on goal. HENLEY 2, MAZAMA 1 — At Klamath Falls, Phillip Pena scored with five minutes remaining to lift Henley over their crosstown rivals. Pena scored earlier in the game for the Hornets’ other goal. Andres Vasquez tied the game for Mazama in the second half. Henley (5-0) maintained pace with Phoenix for the Skyline Conference lead, while the Vikings (3-2) fell two games behind. Nonconference Boys ASHLAND 4, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, Joseph Fallon scored two first-half goals and Rodrigo Ramos added a pair in the second half to lead Ashland. Fallon tallied in the 21st and 28th minutes, while Ramos found the net in the 54th and 58th. The Grizzlies (5-1, 4-1 SOC) held a 19-12 advantage in shots on goal on KU (1-4). ST. MARY’S 7, NORTH VALLEY 1 — At Merlin, Duncan MacDiarmid scored a hat trick to go along with two assists in leading St. Mary’s (4-0) to a nonconference victory. MacDiarmid now has eight goals over the past two outings. Austin Grant scored twice and missed a shot 90 seconds into the game, which was converted by sophomore Dash Hillgartner. Sam Moore headed in a goal off a cross pass from MacDiarmid in the fourth minute. North Valley scored its lone goal in the 66th minute on a penalty kick by Kyle Tulare. Goalkeeper Dylan Bourke had two saves and assisted MacDiarmid’s second goal on a 50-yard pass. UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN 9, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Roseburg, Cody Wittrock turned in a hat trick and Jeremy Goebel scored two goals to lead Umpqua Valley Christian in a runaway nonleague win. The Monarchs (1-4-1) also received goals from Luke Matthews, Jacob Zink, Jacob Grady and Dustin Kummrow.
