Tests immediately following the report of the sewage spill into Kane Creek, a Rogue River tributary just south of Gold Hill, concluded that all but one of five test sites were within guidelines for water quality standards. DEQ officials were notified of the leak Thursday, and subsequent testing was conducted at two locations upstream and three locations downstream from the broken pipe. No estimate of how much sewage was spilled was available, officials said. They advised the public to avoid the water in Kane Creek because of the contamination and ordered the RV park manager to stop pumping sewage through the broken pipe and repair it. Katherine Benenati, DEQ western region public affairs specialist, said the agency's test results "showed that the location closest to the site exceeded our single criteria for bacteria at levels two and a half times higher than a sample upstream." "The two samples taken farther downsteam met the water-quality standards. The only sample that did not meet water-quality standards is (at a location) not accessible to the public." Benenati said possible penalties had not yet been determined. Calls to Dardanelle Trailer Park were not immediately returned. The person who filed the complaint with DEQ requested confidentiality. "At this point I don't want to say it is not a concern, but the samples that did not meet the water-quality standards are not accessible to the public," Benenati said. "Kane Creek is safe for use now."
