Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 28, 2005 Christina Elizabeth Goodenow Million-dollar scratch-it bought with stolen credit card, cops say By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A White City woman who won $1 million on a state lottery scratch-it ticket earlier this month won’t collect the money after police discovered that she bought the ticket with a stolen credit card that had belonged to her dead mother-in-law. Christina Elizabeth Goodenow, 38, purchased the winning Million Dollar Jackpot scratch-it ticket Oct. 9 at Fair City Market in Central Point using a credit card that belonged to Inez Cornett, who died in Sept. 2004. Goodenow made the trip Oct. 12 to Oregon Lottery headquarters in Salem to accept a check of $33,500. The $1 million grand prize is paid out over 20 years in equal annual installments. Medford police detectives began tracking Goodenow on Oct. 26 after receiving information that she had used the credit card to purchase items at several gas stations, restaurants and other stores throughout the Rogue Valley, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. An investigation determined that she had used the stolen credit card to purchase the lottery tickets. They were able to link her to the scratch-its because she had signed her real name on the back of the tickets, George said. Advertisement Because fraud was involved with the purchase of the tickets, police believe that Goodenow will never be able to collect the prize money. A search warrant served Thursday at her home at the 3200 block of East Antelope Road turned up some methamphetamine, but very little money, George said. "Our investigation is still trying to determine what happened to the $33,500," George said. "So far we’ve recovered $1,300 at the time of her arrest." Oregon Lottery officials refused to comment on the case until the investigation was completed. Lottery spokesman Chuck Baumann said that he is unsure what will become of the winning ticket. "I’ll be fascinated to see how this shakes out," he said. "In my 12 years with the Oregon Lottery this is the first time I’ve encountered something like this." Goodenow was lodged without bail in the Jackson County Jail on charges of identity theft, first-degree aggravated theft, first-degree forgery, first-degree theft, credit card fraud, possession of methamphetamine, computer crime and a parole violation. The case made for an interesting bookend to a Medford family’s winning the $340 million Powerball prize last week. "It’s been an interesting week for Southern Oregon," Baumann said.
