Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 7, 2005 South Medford ousts Jaime as girls hoop coach By DON HUNT Mail Tribune Andrea Jaime has been fired as the South Medford High girls basketball coach, the Mail Tribune has learned. Jaime, who guided the Panthers to a 47-31 record and three straight state playoff appearances between the 1999-2000 and 2001-02 seasons, said she was told by school administrators last Friday that she wouldn’t be back as coach. "They told me they wanted to take the program in a new direction," Jaime said. "Nothing more concrete was said than that." Jaime, 34, finished her eight seasons at the Panther helm with a 98-98 record. "There was a meeting scheduled three weeks ahead of when I normally would have my evaluation, so I knew something was up," Jaime said. "I’m pretty shocked over this." Advertisement South Medford athletic director Dennis Murphy declined comment Wednesday, other than to say, "I can’t comment because it’s a personnel issue, but a change has been made." Jamie was coming off back-to-back losing seasons, but felt the program was headed back in a winning direction after last season when the Panthers went 12-13. Jamie suffered her worst record — 7-16 — the previous year. "I felt we had righted the ship," she said. Jaime said she made changes in her approach to coaching to make sure it happened. She did more character-building with her players, was more deliberate in her decisions and spent five weeks with incoming freshmen last spring. "I feel like I’m better at relating to kids than I used to be," she said. "I’ve always tried to learn more each year and change what I needed to change." Jaime’s best season was 2001-02, when the Panthers won a school-record 17 games, upset Lakeridge to reach the Class 4A state tournament and then won a state tournament game for the first time in school history. The previous season, the Panthers went 16-10, finished second in the Southern Oregon Conference and reached the state tournament despite losing standout guard Heather Fossen before the season and starting post Amber Hunt late in the season to torn ACLs. Jamie was named the SOC coach of the year in 2001. Virtually all of the individual single-season and career records were set by players who suited up for Jaime. Jaime, who teaches American and contemporary history at South High, said she may return to coaching, although probably not immediately. She has a 3-year- old son with husband Edrel, and the couple hope to expand their family soon. "If another door opens for me in coaching then I’ll have to consider it," she said. Murphy said he didn’t know when a new coach would be named. South Medford is also looking to replace coaches in cross country and boys and girls soccer.
