Chase Bank has rolled out several new options, including an in-lobby kiosk technology akin to self-serve checkout at grocery stores. Three new devices — an enhanced ATM, a cash recycler for tellers and a debit card embosser — have been installed at the Crater Lake Avenue branch, Chase's busiest in Jackson County. "The volume of clients, tellers and bankers we have is a good fit for testing out technology in the valley," branch Manager Heather Wise said. "The new kiosk does about 90 percent of the transactions done by a traditional teller." The Crater Lake Avenue office is one of five in Oregon with the new kiosk teller capabilities; two others have the ability to instantly issue debit cards. The in-branch kiosk, parked on the end of teller row, is equipped with a portrait touch screen monitor — think of an oversized tablet. It handles the usual ATM functions and is capable of handling credit card and mortgage payments. Another component setting this generation apart from others is its ability to customize withdrawals, rather than the standard ATM fare of endless Jacksons. An additional advantage of the kiosk, only accessible during business hours, is that customers can withdraw up to $3,000 daily from the machine, plus $500 from an external ATM, Wise said. Tellers' jobs have gotten easier when dealing with cash deposits because instead of painstakingly placing cash in drawers, the new sorter handles that chore. The machine is even capable of picking out counterfeit currency as it sorts through stacks of cash. The same cash that came in one transaction can be pumped back out in the next "So far it hasn't detected any counterfeits," Wise said. "But it's much more efficient in its count for tellers and individuals. It lets us know what's counted with no errors." The branch staff can also emboss and issue new debit cards on site. "Instead of waiting for it to arrive in the mail and having to activate it by phone, we can provide the customer with a card and inform the system it's activated," Wise said. "Whether it's a new account, lost or damaged card, we hand the customer a new card, and they're ready to go without waiting five to seven days."
