Freshman shortstop Kelsey Randall tied SOU's single-season hits record by going 5-for-7 on the day, notching three singles and three RBIs to lead the Raiders to a 7-1 victory in the opener. The Coyotes won Game 2, 9-5, but by then the damage had been done. SOU (31-23, 12-14 Cascade Conference) earned the CCC's fourth and final berth in an upcoming playoff, which will take place May 1-3 and also include one Frontier Conference team. Seeding is to be determined by a point system that will be finalized when the Raiders complete the regular season next Friday at Concordia. The Yotes (19-31, 10-18) needed to defeat SOU twice and the Raiders to lose two at Concordia to force a fourth-place tie. The Raiders avoided that scenario behind Brianne Craig's complete game in the opener. She blanked C of I through the final six innings and yielded four hits to improve to 13-7 on the mound. After falling behind in the first, Randall put the Raiders up in the second with an opposite-field single that scored Kayla Douglas and Megan Winton. Douglas's single plated two more runs in the third, and her third hit of the game drove in the first run in a three-run seventh. Randall now has 80 hits and 51 runs scored, tying records that were both established by Deni Rowley in 2006. Winton added two hits and two runs in the opener. Ally Painter went 3-for-4 with a double and a two-run single in Game 2, while Gina Ayala went 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and two walks. Katie Rowe's three-run homer put the Yotes up for good in the first inning, and Hailey Chambers tacked on a two-run bomb in the fourth. SOU hadn't advanced to the postseason in consecutive years since 2005 and '06. Baseball OREGON 15, NO. 10 USC 4 : At Los Angeles, Oregon jumped out to an early lead scoring seven runs in the second inning and freshman David Peterson gave the Ducks a needed strong start on the mound in the win. The Ducks chased Oregon Starter Kyle Twomey after 1.2 innings, scoring seven runs on five hits against the Trojans’ starter who came into the game with a 6-1 record and a 1.79 ERA. Oregon (23-17, 5-9 Pac-12) got a two-RBI double from Nick Catalano to jump to a 2-0 lead and then added runs on a single by Austin Grebeck that scored two more and another two-RBI double by Mark Karaviotis to build a 7-0 lead after an inning and a half. Mitchell Tolman, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, added a run in the third with a base hit scoring Daniel Patzlaff to give the Ducks an 8-0 lead. Scott Heineman drove in a run in the sixth to push the lead to 9-0 before USC (28-10, 9-5 Pac-12) answered with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-3. ARIZONA 3, OREGON STATE 1 : At Corvallis, Logan Ice hit his first career home run and Drew Rasmussen scattered just three hits and two runs in seven innings but the Oregon State baseball team couldn’t get the win. Ice capped off a 12-pitch at bat in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot over the right field fence. Coming with two outs and off Arizona (24-12, 9-8 Pac-12 Conference) starter Nathan Bannister, it put the Beavers (24-12, 7-7) up early, 1-0. Arizona, however, answered with a two-run fifth when Scott Kingery laced a two-out single through the left side of the infield with two down and the bases loaded. It scored two and sent Rasmussen to the loss, pushing his record to 4-3 on the year. Rasmussen struck out seven and issued four walks; he and Friday’s starter, Andrew Moore, have combined to hold the Wildcats to just eight hits in the first two games of the series. Overall, thanks to a solo home run by Bobby Dalbec in the ninth, Arizona has nine hits in 18 innings over the two games. Track & Field SOU RAIDER OPEN : At Ashland, five years away from Raider Stadium didn't make the Southern Oregon University track and field team any less comfortable in its refurbished digs at Saturday's SOU Raider Open. The Raiders dominated the meet with a triumphant return home that included a couple school records, a handful of NAIA Championship qualifying times and more than enough highlights to fill the afternoon. Amelia Maguin continued to diversify her resume with another SOU record and an automatic NAIA qualifying mark in a fourth event, this time in the 200 meters. She came in at 24.60 seconds, erasing the previous Raider mark of 24.97 that Tiwana Merritt established in 2001 and getting in under the NAIA 'A' benchmark of 24.80. Margot Hamman was second in the same race at 26.55 seconds to qualify for the Cascade Conference Championships after winning the 12-person 100-meter dash in 12.84. Maguin also won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.88 and was a part of two victorious relay teams — the 4x100, which won in 49.97 and also consisted of Anna Reitman, Lauren McGowne and Hamman; and the 4x800 team that included Jessie Rozario, Aspen Abbott and Reitman, and beat the school record by 30 seconds with a time of 9:22.16 that put it at No. 6 on the NAIA performance list and qualified as an 'A' standard. Markus Sanders won the hammer (193 feet 3 inches) and the discus (176-9), missing school records by less than two feet in both disciplines and improving 'A' marks he had already established. He shot to Nos. 2 and 3 on those respective NAIA performance lists, upping his previous hammer mark by over 14 feet. Elsewhere in the field, Danny Parks won the shot put with a mark of 45-8 , the fourth-best in the conference, and Anthony Neal won the 15-person long jump at 22-0 for a personal-best and the No. 5 mark in the CCC. In its only try of the season, the Raider men's 4x800 team ofHenry Hall, Zach Boyd-Helm, Matt Williams and Dylan Alexander qualified automatically for the NAIA Championships with a winning time of 7:43.74 — the second-fastest in school history and the fourth-fastest in the NAIA. Boyd-Helm and Kevin Jorgensen also went 1-2 in the 800 meters. In women's distance races, Rozario was first of 15 in the 1,500 meters at 4:39.85. Breanna Buckles notched a couple season-bests, the first to win the hammer (141-4) and the second to take second in the discus (122-10 ). Alexander won the 17-person men's 5K in 3:54.29 and Connor Cushman won the 22-person men's 5K in 15:16.41 for a PR. OREGON RELAYS : At Eugene, on a weekend where the Ducks racked up 18 event wins at Hayward Field during the Oregon Relays, Jenna Prandini carried the torch at the Mt. SAC Relays where she set two school records and posted two world-leading times on Saturday. Prandini highlighted the day by winning the 100 with a wind-legal time of 10.92, breaking the previous school record of 10.96 set by English Gardner in 2013. The Clovis, Calif., native is now tied with Elaine Thompson for the fastest time in the world this season, and now owns the second-fastest time in NCAA history, the best since Dawn Sowell in 1989. Prandini owns sole possession of the world-leading mark in the 200 after winning in 22.42, breaking her owns school record of 22.60 set last season.
