South girls come up short EUGENE With post player Karla Zenz missing in action, the South Medford girls basketball team couldnt contend down low with Redmond at the Far West Classic tournament at South Eugene High School on Tuesday. The Panthers (4-4) were overwhelmed during the second half en route to dropping a 70-42 decision in the 12-team tournament. Zenz, a 6-foot senior, missed Tuesdays game while still on Christmas vacation but will return for Thursdays 4:30 p.m. game against Chestermere of Alberta, Canada. South Medford hung with Redmond through the first half, trailing 25-19 at the break, but folded in the third quarter under a 27-13 scoring surge. "They forced the ball inside on us a lot in the third quarter," said South Medford coach Andrea Wagner. "They shot well and rebounded well and we didnt." Redmond guard Mel Gibson tallied a game-high 22 points with 11 coming in the decisive third-quarter run. Teammate Michelle Oakland took advantage of Zenzs low-post absence with 10 of her 19 points in the third. Sophomore guard Whitney Grant led South Medford with 12 points while Kellie Thomas added eight and Emily Perttu seven.
