No matter how good a soccer team’s defense is, goals must be scored to win. In Skyline Conference boys action this fall, two goal-scorers stood above the rest. John Feeney of Phoenix and Dillon Borta of Hidden Valley filled up opposing nets and did the countless other little things to lead their respective teams to successful seasons. For their efforts, Feeney and Borta were named co-players of the year by Skyline coaches. A strong, swift and skilled junior central midfielder, Feeney tallied 26 goals and dished 23 assists to power the Pirates’ always-productive offense. Despite that gaudy goal total, Feeney was more apt to pass than go it alone for Phoenix, which finished 15-1 overall and won the Skyline with a 12-0 mark. "John wasn’t like our go-to guy," says Dennis Flenner, who completed his eighth year directing the Pirates with a fourth league title. "John just distributed the ball to make sure we won. ... He’s really dynamic, and he plays incredible defense, too." With four teammates around him who scored 10 or more goals, Feeney could afford to be exceedingly unselfish. He scored a large number of his tallies on deadly, bending free kicks. On the other hand, Borta, a senior who was the Skyline’s second-leading scorer as a junior, was depended upon as the Mustangs’ primary threat. But after watching teams focus their defenses on denying Borta the ball up front early on, Hidden Valley head coach Charlie Seal moved his star back to the central midfield, where touches are abundant. Borta responded to post 29 goals and pass out 16 assists for a young Mustangs squad that finished 12-5 overall and second in the Skyline at 10-2. "He’s an outstanding dribbler, and he’s got unorthodox moves," says Seal, who is stepping down after seven seasons in charge at Hidden Valley, with a Class 3A/2A/1A state championship in 2000 the shining moment of a 97-27- 13 run. Assistant Tim Hannah will take over. "(Borta) grew up in Williams, and there’s not a whole lot to do out there. You just take a soccer ball out in your front yard and make up moves. ... He has moves that I’ve never seen before." Joining Feeney and Borta as first-team all-Skyline selections are: senior central fullback John Chavez, senior central midfielder Chris Swann and sophomore forward Jaime Escabedo of Phoenix; junior fullback Torrent Saunders, senior forward Daron McGlothlin and junior goalkeeper Jake Supola of Hidden Valley; senior sweeper Justin Rohenbach of North Valley; senior sweeper Andy Eichmann of Illinois Valley; and senior fullback Travis Brollier of Henley. First-year Mazama head coach Dennis Garcia was voted coach of the year after the Vikings went 6-6 for fourth place in Skyline action to advance to the conference playoffs, their first postseason berth in 12 years.
