North's Anderson makes most of chance On a deep North Medford pitching staff, senior right-hander Tallun Anderson could only wait his turn. Anderson's opportunity came Thursday in a non-conference baseball game against Phoenix, and he took full advantage with a complete-game, two-hit, 3-0 shutout at Miles Field. "This is his (Anderson) fourth year in the program," said North Medford coach Brett Wolfe. "He's had to battle through some adversity with the lack of playing time. He showed great character and pitched very well today." The Black Tornado spotted Anderson a 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles by Ken Halpin and Colby Gonzales in the first-inning. Gonzales extended his hit streak to 20 games. Halpin would score two more times for North, both on RBI singles off the bat of Charlie Jensen. Anderson never found himself in a jam as he didn't face more than four batters in an inning. "Tallun got ahead in the count most of the time," said Wolfe. "He mixed in a nice changeup and had a sneaky fastball to get the hitters out." Anderson struck out three and was aided by an excellent defensive effort. "Our defense played superb," said Wolfe, whose team had one error. "It's the best defense I think we've played all year. "The guys were pumped to be playing behind Tallun. He's a popular guy on the team and he really rose to the occasion." Junior Shawn Backstrom also extended a hit streak, to 15 games, with a single in the fourth inning. The Black Tornado improved to 16-3-1 on the season. It hosts Eagle Point at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in a Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader at Miles Field.
