Couple lost nearly everything in fire Thanksgiving night By Julie Swensen Her wedding dress. Wedding pictures. A videotape of their son's birth. Those are just some of the priceless possessions that Central Point residents Mark and Kelly Bohnert lost Thanksgiving night when fire destroyed their home at 9874 Blackwell Road. "It's those things you can't ever, ever, ever replace," said Julie Bohnert, Mark's mother and owner of the home the couple was renting. The blaze also displaced the Bohnerts' roommate, Chris Burrell, 20. No one was home when the fire was reported around 6 p.m. While the exterior of the house remained standing, fire gutted the inside and firefighters determined the structure and its contents a total loss. Firefighters are still trying to determine a cause. Julie Bohnert said the home had belonged to her family since her grandparents moved into it many years ago. While the wood-frame home was insured, the couple didn't have insurance to cover the contents, and they lost nearly everything. Friends have been helping them with donations of clothes and the establishment of a bank account, but in the meantime, the couple spent Friday sifting through ashes to see what they could find. Julie Bohnert, who said her son and daughter-in-law were too upset to talk, listed some of the things they lost. In addition to the wedding dress, wedding photos and the video, the couple also lost most of the photos of their 2-year-old son Austin. All of their furniture was destroyed, and while some of Austin's clothes and toys were salvaged, his parents didn't fare as well. Mark, who works as an assistant produce manager at Ray's Food Place in Medford, salvaged a pair of jeans from the mud. He and his wife, who works at Western Bank in Medford, each has one pair of shoes. That's it. "Kelly's got nothing but the clothes on her back," said Julie. Two hundred dollars in change the couple was saving in their closet for a second anniversary trip in March was melted in the heat. Three hundred dollars worth of Christmas presents is gone, as is $250 in cash they kept in a drawer. The flames also destroyed their bathroom, which they'd just remodeled. Mark, Kelly and Austin are staying at Mark's parents' nearby home on Blackwell Road until they find another place to live. A fund has been set up for the family at the main branch of Western Bank on Crater Lake Avenue in Medford. Checks can be made to the "Mark and Kelly Fire Fund," account number 05697912306. Also, friend Jodie Riddle is collecting toys and clothes at her home at 322 King St., Medford. Bags of the items can be left on Riddle's front porch. Mark's pant size is a 32/33 inch waist and a 34 length; he wears a size 11 shoe. Kelly wears a size 1-3 in clothing and a size 7 shoe. Austin wears a 3T and a size 7 shoe.
