Seeing as how we must use a No. 2 pencil on the ballot sheet, is it also required to use a pencil to sign our name? Is it not safer to always sign in pen? — P. and S. Burns, Medford Your instincts are right on. According to the Jackson County Elections Center, the envelope should be signed in ink. In this county, No. 2 pencils are required for the ballot because optical card reader machinery is designed to read graphite. Other pencils might not contain graphite, which the machinery can’t read.
