The once-homeless dog that was given a new lease on life when people flocked to send money via social media is home with his foster owners, recovering after surgery to remove a large mass from his chest. Still sore from staples — and enduring medication adjustments and doctor's orders to take it easy — the brindle-coated boxer is back to wagging his tail and attempting to be playful, said foster owner Kimberly Howell. The mass, a rare type of canine cancer that had invaded Mr. Jake's chest, was the size of a human spleen, but doctors determined the tumor was unlikely to return. Mr. Jake was found wandering the streets of White City three months ago and taken to animal control in an emaciated state with a severe cough and skin disease. If all goes well, he could be ready for adoption sometime in February. "Mr. Jake's staples will be removed this week or next. We will X-ray his chest again in two months to look for any growth, which shouldn't happen as they got everything and it was benign and rare," Howell said. Just as she was getting Jake home and headed toward recovery, Howell and her husband, Paul, were contacted to pick up two additional rescues. A mastif-pointer mix dubbed Miss Coral was taken in for eye surgery, while a third dog, Noel, had been slated for euthanasia the day after Christmas. Noel, a Walker coonhound, was found dumped on Dead Indian Memorial Road with a deformed, improperly healed leg that will require surgery. "Noel is our next biggest problem. His leg will take a lot to fix. Something happened when he was still a puppy, so it's fused together wrong. He gets around with it, but it's painful," Howell said. "They were going to put him down Saturday, right after Christmas, but just like with Mr. Jake, Facebook people who found him and Coral told us about Noel and we went down to save him." Howell said her organization is funded via online donations through www.missgabriel.org . "We just do what we can and want to keep everyone going," Howell said. "The ones we can find homes for, we do. "These are dogs that never had a first chance, so we don't call it a second chance. The ones that can't be adopted will always have a home with us.
