Rogue River advances into state playoffs ROGUE RIVER - Rogue River, which hadn't won a playoff game since the 1970s, advanced to the state playoffs Thursday with a 63-59 Skyline Conference boys basketball playoff win over Hidden Valley. The Chieftains, who trailed 22-5 early in the second quarter, advanced to the state subtournament. They visit Marist, the No. 2 Sky-Em League team, on Saturday, with the winner moving on to the Class 3A state tournament March 5-9 in Corvallis. Rogue River (18-6) was the No. 3 seed in the Skyline playoffs. Hidden Valley was No. 5 and had beaten North Valley two days earlier in a playoff. The score was tied at 5-5 in the first quarter when the Mustangs embarked on a 17-0 run. Rogue River coach Scott Anderson came out at the start of the second quarter with an entirely new lineup. "We were at a point of no return," he said. "We had to do something now or it would be over." Junior forward Matt Branch scored five points off the bench and provided a flash of intensity for the Chieftains. J.T. Vaughn and Ryan Girodat scored 11 of Rogue River's 17 second-quarter points. Jason Luchterhand had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Chieftains. Luke Mortinson scored 14. Isaac Harrop tallied 16 points and Chris Jiron 15 for Hidden Valley (9-17). Girls HIDDEN VALLEY 37, PHOENIX 26 - At Murphy, Jamie Cavener scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half, but it was too little, too late for Phoenix as Hidden Valley won in a Skyline Conference playoff. Shea Ford scored 11 points and had 10 steals to lead the Mustangs (19-6), who will play at Sutherlin in the girls Class 3A state basketball playoffs on Saturday. Despite the loss of Gina Anderson three minutes into the game, Hidden Valley managed an 11-2 lead after the first quarter and a 19-9 halftime edge.
