Doris Evelyn Mayfield Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 29, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jan. 29, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Doris Evelyn Mayfield passed away at age 95 January 23, 2015, with her children at her side. Her loving family and many friends will miss her dearly because of her warmth, loving nature, and enthusiasm for life. Doris was born in Astoria, Ore. in 1919. When she was young, her family moved to southern California. She had fond memories of the time she spent on Catalina Island, and this began her life-long love of the ocean. Doris graduated from UCLA and obtained her masters degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Doris worked as a speech therapist, a teacher, a counselor at Washington Middle School, and also owned and ran the Valley Book and Art Store in Salinas. Doris met Dick Mayfield at the Kern County Office of Education. They fell in love and were married for 64 years. Salinas, Calif. served as their family home for 40 years where they raised their three children, Billie Ann, Gordon, and David. Doris and Dick were deeply devoted to one another. Dick passed away in 2013 at age 101. In addition to working and taking care of her family, Doris volunteered for numerous organizations. She worked at the Steinbeck House for 17 years, served on the Board of the Monterey County Historical Society, and was appointed to the Monterey County Parks Commission, to name a few. She was instrumental in the founding of the National Steinbeck Center. After retirement, Doris and Dick opened Butterchurn Antiques in San Juan Bautista, Calif. In 1991, they moved to Medford, Ore., where they continued their antique business and lived at the Rogue Valley Manor. In Medford, Doris enjoyed many new friends and continued volunteer work. For many years Doris and Dick worked at the Rogue Valley Manor Bid Sale, and they organized and conducted tours for the RVM Travel Committee. Doris also enjoyed volunteering at the Medford Airport. Doris was a people person. She loved her family and friends. Nothing made her happier. She lived a very active and interesting life. Doris and Dick traveled to many parts of the world. She was an avid reader, an excellent cook, and enjoyed being surrounded by her plants and eclectic collections. Doris will be greatly missed by her daughter, Billie Ann Evans and husband Bryn; her son, Gordon Mayfield and wife Janet; her son, David Mayfield and wife Carlotta; grandchildren, Bryn III, Doug, Jenny, Tara, and Alexa; and great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Connor, Frankie, and Bowe.
