"Got us some big baskets and then he was a physical presence defensively," said Beavers coach Wayne Tinkle. "He asked me a couple of times to take him out. I said, 'We can't.'" Usually a low-post banger, Reid came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points and lead Oregon State past Washington State 55-50 Thursday night. Malcolm Duvivier added 15 points for the Beavers (15-7, 6-4 Pac-12), who improved to 13-0 at Gill Coliseum this season. "We don't even talk about it," Tinkle said. "We're at home. We don't lose at home." Reid said he saw the team's usual scoring options having trouble against the Cougars. "Malcolm and I, we saw that we needed to pick it up a little bit more, not just scoring, but also just being leaders out there on the court," Reid said. Neither team was able to pull away until the Beavers went on an 8-0 run, with Reid's jumper putting Oregon State up 51-44 with 2:27 left. The Cougars (10-12, 4-6) trimmed the lead to four points, but Reid's driving lay-in with 47 seconds left made the score 53-47 and helped seal the win. "I thought Reid just took the game to us, physically man-handled us on his drives," said Washington State coach Ernie Kent. Josh Hawkinson had 16 points, 10 rebounds and three steals and Ike Iroegbu scored 11 for the Cougars. Kent said the Cougars have been hurt by a lack of consistency. "We need more guys to be on their game," he added. Washington State outrebounded Oregon State 43-34, but had 12 turnovers, compared to the Beavers five. Both teams shot poorly, with the Cougars hitting 37.3 percent and the Beavers shooting 38.9 percent. "We aren't scoring a bunch of points. We have to play a certain pace, but if we defend, we'll be in every ball game," Tinkle said. WSU opened up with an 8-0 lead as Oregon State missed its first four shots and committed two turnovers in the opening three minutes of the game. The Beavers clawed back with an 11-2 run capped by Reid's lay-in to tie it at 23-all with 4:44 left in the half. The game turned into a back-and-forth contest, and the Cougars led 32-30 at halftime. Entering the week, Gary Payton II was leading the Beavers with 12.8 points and eight rebounds per game. He had six points and 11 rebounds on Thursday. DeVonte Lacy was averaging 17.7 points to lead the Cougars, but scored only five against Oregon State. TIP-INS Washington State has now lost five of six. ... DeVonte Lacy needs nine points to pass Brian Quinnett (1985-1989) and move into 10th place on the Cougars' career scoring list. Oregon State entered the game eighth in the nation in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 36.8 percent shooting. ... Former coach Jimmy Anderson, Pac-10 coach of the year 25 years ago, was in attendance and honored during a timeout. DUCK HUNT On Sunday, Washington State coach Ernie Kent heads back to Eugene for the first time as a coach after being fired as Oregon head coach in 2010, after 13 seasons. He downplayed the matchup, however, noting that he's been an analyst for Duck games several times. "It's not as emotional as everybody makes it sound like," he said. HOME COURT Oregon State is one of only two schools in the country with undefeated men's and women's teams at home. The other is Wichita State. UP NEXT Washington State travels to Oregon on Sunday. Oregon State hosts Washington on Sunday.
