Beck held a press conference Thursday afternoon. Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell OSP seizes 40 pounds of pot With the help of a drug-sniffing dog, Oregon State Police seized more than 40 pounds of marijuana worth about $120,000. Tow-truck drivers found the stash Wednesday after a 1999 silver Volkswagen Beetle heading north on Interstate 5 broke down outside of Ashland. The car’s driver asked the company to tow the car to Vancouver, Wash. Police canine Beepers and his handler, Detective Dave Beck, arrived at the tow yard, where the dog alerted Beck to the car’s trunk. Inside, police found about 38 white plastic garbage bags, each containing about one pound of "green bud" marijuana, Beck said. Numerous fabric-softener sheets had been placed inside and over the bags to mask the narcotic’s odor, Beck added. The car’s occupants, 25-year-old Laureano Vargas Arreguin and 24-year-old Jesus Abigail Calvillo, were arrested on charges of possession, delivery and manufacture of marijuana. The Sunnyside, Wash., residents were lodged in the Jackson County Jail in lieu of $125,000 bail. They were not the vehicle owners but allowed officers to search it, said OSP Lt. Tanya Henderson. The bust is the largest for local state troopers this year, said OSP Capt. Eric Rodriguez. Four pounds and 11 pounds of marijuana were seized in two separate routine traffic stops near Grants Pass in April, he said.
