Freshman duo help Loggers coast to victory Boys prep basketball KLAMATH FALLS -- Opposing coaches interested in simply stopping Butte Falls seniors Travis Smeltz and Dusty Harrington were sent a message Saturday in boys basketball action. Clearly doing all it could to stop the Logger leaders, Hosanna Christian left an opening that freshmen Jed Rowden and Isaac Stephenson were more than able to fill in leading Butte Falls to a 64-47 Skyline A League victory. "The defenses they were running were designed specially to stop those two guys and they left a weakness on the others," Butte Falls coach Mike Harrington said of Hosanna's scheme. "We were just smart enough to find those weaknesses and the guys came through with the shots." Rowden scored a game-high 24 points and Stephenson added 15 for the Loggers (5-7, 2-0 Sky A), while Smeltz had 10 and Harrington had eight points and eight rebounds. "This is the first year ever that I've started a freshman, and I've got two of them out there," the seventh-year coach said of Rowden and Stephenson. Butte Falls opened a 15-3 lead in the first quarter thanks to a suffocating fullcourt press, then maintained that cushion in closing out Hosanna (0-2 Sky A). BRIGHTON ACADEMY 63, PROSPECT 61 -- At Grants Pass, Scott Butterbaugh poured in a game-high 31 points, including a clutch three-point play, to lead Brighton Academy to its second straight Skyline A League victory. Prospect managed a lead throughout the game until Butterbaugh's inside basket and subsequent free throw put the Lions ahead 62-59 with one minute to play. After a Keith Howard basket trimmed the deficit, Paul Kennedy converted one of his two foul shots to put Brighton ahead 63-61. Howard's shot to tie the game for the Cougars missed its mark in the waning seconds. Howard led Prospect (5-5, 1-1 Sky A) with 26 points, while Zach Gordon had 15 and Donnie Andresen 13. New Hope Christian (0-10, 0-2 Sky A) received a good effort from freshman point guard Daniel Lockard, who registered a double-double with 21 points and 10 steals. Lockard also grabbed six rebounds. New Hope junior wing Aaron Tuttle scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The Warriors had a difficult time at the foul line, converting on only five of 18 free throws. MARY'S 63, UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN 46 -- St. Mary's senior post Geoff Haas demonstrated his versatility with 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the non-conference game at the Crusaders gym. St. Mary's (10-2) used a balanced attack to build as much as a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders had five players score six points and two others total five. Brian Stout added five assists for the Crusaders, while teammate Chris Murphy had two blocks. UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN (46) -- P. Willerford 0, D. The Challengers converted 8 of 10 free throws when the Irish were forced to foul in the fourth quarter. Andy Baker poured in 16 points and Dan Kelly added 15 to lead Cascade. Forward Don Jenkins snared 10 rebounds and had six steals, while Andy Kimmelshue did an efficient job of running the Challengers' offense. Craig Schofield paced Riddle with 15 points and A.J.
