But, if you do a little research you find that this isn't so. According to the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crimes, the U.S. ranks 103rd out of 192 countries with 5.4 deaths per 100,000 people. The average is 10.5 per 100,000. That places well below average for the world. For developed countries we are still fourth, not the worst! If you look at assaults you will find that the U.S. is 33rd out of 36 developed countries. And we rank 26th for homicides by firearms with 3.2 per 100,000, yet we have more guns per 100,000 than the 25 countries with more deaths, some of which have very strict gun ownership laws. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? I submit it isn't the number of guns in society, it's the lack of mental health facilities and recognition of persons with problems that is the problem with gun violence. I also submit that, were all guns to disappear tomorrow, we would still have these mass deaths by use of bombs, cars, machetes, etc. Rob Whitters Ashland Monster Dash a success With support from over 800 race registrants, 500 Monster Ball Pasta Party guests and over 100 volunteers — and generous donations from nearly 150 corporate, business and individual sponsors — the Seventh annual Monster Dash Run for Education and the pre-race pasta dinner and party were a huge success. Thank you one and all! This event was hosted by the Ashland Kiwanis Club, leading sponsor Yogurt Hut, and the Ashland Schools Foundation to raise funds for the foundation’s Impact Grant program available at all Ashland public schools. Because of this event, hundreds of students will receive an enriched education in the arts, sciences and across the curriculum via the grants available to teachers. Congratulations to the race participants, and a big thank you to all of the volunteers and sponsors, and to the general public for coming out to support this fundraiser. Ron Parker, president Ashland Kiwanis Club Ashland veering off course As I watch the Ashland City Council struggling with the traveler issue, I see them veering in the wrong direction. Coming from Santa Cruz, which has already gone down this path years ago and has become a nightmare of class warfare, I implore the council again to form an advisory panel of homeless people to give them the insight they need to make useful decisions, as they don't know what they're dealing with! Penalization of the homeless doesn't work. They crumple tickets and laugh because they have nothing to lose anyway. An outreach person downtown will make no difference when there is no actual infrastructure to help. They need to invest in services which don't exist yet here. It took me 10 months just to get a counselor who is too green to understand the heaviness of homeless issues and trauma. The Resource Center is overtaxed and lacking in resources despite a wealthy influx in this town. Take note: Mayor Don Lane of Santa Cruz has written recently that Santa Cruz was so busy passing the buck that they never did what was their part in helping. Please don't make the same mistakes being repeated across the country right now! Ashland can do better!
