Jason R. Caster as the 2015 Marine Aviator of the Year during a ceremony on May 15 in San Diego. Caster is the son of Terry and Debbie Caster of Central Point, and was born in Medford. He graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School. The award, also known as the Alfred A. Cunningham Award, is named after the first Marine aviator. The first recipient of the award was Lt. Col. John Glenn in 1962 for his work as an astronaut. Caster earned the 2015 award for outstanding contributions to Marine aviation while serving as the assistant operations officer, and as a Huey pilot for Marine Light Attack Squadron 369 in 2014. While Caster was deployed in Afghanistan, he served as the escort flight lead during the successful recovery of a disabled British aircraft and ensured the safe return of more than 60 coalition personnel from an area containing enemy fighters. He also developed an aircrew core competency forecasting model while serving as the assistant operations officer. The model directly increased the squadron's training rating during a challenging transition to a new aircraft, and more than 132 air crew members have received qualifications and designations since the model's development.
