Sours will be held at noon Monday in the Rogue River Room in the Stevenson Union on the Ashland campus. Sours died Dec. 4 at age 79. He served as SOU’s president from August 1969 to December 1978. He is responsible for many campus facility improvements, including the Stevenson Union in 1969, the Music Building in 1972, the Britt Building remodel in 1973, the Education and Psychology Building in 1973, and the Merriman Racquetball Court in 1977. The Sours Life Science Laboratory was named after him in 1979. In addition to other academic honors, Sours held a doctorate in political science from Harvard University. Before his tenure in Ashland, Sours was the honorary Fulbright visiting professor at the University of Istanbul, Turkey. Sours pushed for SOU’s involvement in foreign studies in France, Japan, Mexico, England, Germany and South Korea. After retiring, Sours became a development consultant for Dankook University in Seoul, South Korea. Sours was in Korea during the 1979 assassination of President Park Chung-hee, which took place within months after Sours accepted his new post. He wrote several firsthand accounts for the Mail Tribune as martial law settled upon the country. Sours and his wife, Alice, served on many committees, commissions and boards including the Britt Festivals and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
