The third-ranked Crusaders got one goal and an assist from Dash Hilgartner en route to a 4-0 victory. "(Canyonville Christian) had some aggressive forwards," said St. Mary's coach Paul Coughlin. "Our defense held them tight. We wouldn't allow them to turn with the ball. We kept a lot of body pressure on them." The St. Mary's defense was sparked by sweeper Martin Nelson, stopper Chris Sutton, fullback Nick DeYarmin and Jeremy Kotler. Mark Raneile scored for St. Mary's off a Hilgartner assist within the opening four minutes. Advertisement Later in the half, Hilgartner took a long ball from Nelson and tallied from about 10 yards to give St. Mary's a 2-0 lead. In the second half, DeYarmin converted a penalty kick and Max Miller scored unassisted on a strong individual effort. "They came out loaded for bear," said Coughlin. "It was the most physical game we've played so far. We played tough, scrappy defense. The defense held so strong (Canyonville Christian) never got a clean shot on goal." The district champion Crusaders (12-0, 8-0 Dist. 3) will host a league playoff match Oct. 28 before entering the Class 3A/2A/1A state playoffs. MVL Volleyball PROSPECT 3, PAISLEY 0 — At Paisley, Prospect, which had already wrapped up the Mountain Valley League title, rolled to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-12 win. The Cougars (11-1, 10-1 MVL) got 10 kills and three aces from Lindsey Verret, six kills, 16 of 16 serving, two aces and two blocks from Candi Lewis, six kills and two blocks from Caiti Lewis and five kills from Maeghan Scriven. Setters Megan Shallenberger and Catherine Anderson each had 14 assists for Prospect, which is in the district tournament next weekend at Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls. Shallenberger was 10-for-10 serving, and Anderson had three digs and three aces. BUTTE FALLS 3, DAYS CREEK 1 — At Days Creek, after a slow start, Kyndi Sutfin led Butte falls to a 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-10 MVL victory. Sutfin had 13 kills and three aces. Jossalyn Burg also played well for the Loggers (9-4, 9-3 MVL) with nine assists and four aces. Carlee Stephenson added nine kills and nine assists.
