Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Pile-up injures Medford woman A Medford woman was in fair condition Monday night with injuries suffered in a three-car crash triggered when a 77-year-old driver made an illegal U-turn on Highway 99 near Central Point, authorities said. Lee Bertolero, 60, was hurt when her Toyota pickup rolled and landed on its roof in the ditch along Highway 99 about 100 yards south of Beall Lane about 9:25 a.m., according to the Oregon State Police. Bertolero was driving north on Highway 99 when Ana Mercedes Hopf of Central Point was driving south in the slow lane but decided to make a U-turn, the OSP said. Hopf’s Mercury sedan crossed all lanes of travel before it was struck by Bertolero’s pickup, police said. The pickup then was struck by a plywood truck driven north by Richard Dale Chambers, 54, of Medford, police said. Hopf and Bertolero were taken by ambulance to Providence Medford Medical Center, where Hopf was treated and released, a hospital nursing supervisor said. Bertolero was admitted and listed Monday evening in fair condition, the supervisor said. Advertisement Chambers was not hurt, police said. An OSP trooper cited Hopf for careless driving, reports indicate.
