Murphys win gives SOU the edge FULLERTON, Calif. Colin Murphy scored an 18-7 major decision at 149 pounds over Heath Alojado to clinch a 23-18 non-conference wrestling victory for Southern Oregon over Cal-State Fullerton on Friday night. Although Murphy got the glory for nailing down the win over the Division I foes, the stage was set earlier in the night. The Raiders held an early 15-3 lead in the match before losing four matches in a row to fall behind, 18-15. David Rodriguez capped the run for Fullerton by rallying from a 7-1 deficit in the second period for an 11-9 decision over Lee Ottow at 133. But SOUs Jeremy Wynia scored a 15-5 major decision over John Blalock at 141 to put the Raiders ahead to stay at 19-18. "I figured we were kind of favored in 149 but 141 was a match we needed to have in order to win, so Jeremy Wynia did a good job for us there," said SOU coach Mike Ritchie. Freshman John Sills got SOU rolling with a pin at 165 to give the Raiders a 6-3 lead. Zachary Mock followed with a come-from-behind 6-4 decision for SOU at 174, with teammate Ryan Schuman earning a pin at 184 for a 15-3 lead. "It was a good dual for us," said Ritchie. "We kind of got rolling at the start, and winning three in a row like that was kind of a key for us in the end." Womens Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 69, EVERGREEN STATE 41 At Olympia, Wash., Tiwana Merritt and Melissa Core scored 13 points apiece to help Southern Oregon hand Evergreen State its 11th straight loss in the Cascade Conference opener for both teams. The Raiders blew open a close game with an 11-0 run to open the second half and grabbed a 39-23 lead just four minutes into the second stanza. Merritt and Core both connected on three 3-point goals while Jamie Stanford added 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Teammate Sarah Petersen scored 10 points while Alison Richards pulled down 10 boards and dished out five assists. "We played a little better than we have been and shot the ball better in the second half," said Southern Oregon coach Shirley Huyett. "It was nice to get four people in double figures (scoring)." Heather Johnson led the Geoducks (0-1, 1-11) with 30 points. Johnson scored 16 first-half points but was held to one field goal over the first eight minutes of the second half after the Raiders switched to a man-to-man defense. "We were playing a couple of different zone defenses, so she (Johnson) was getting some open looks," said Huyett. "In the second half we went to man-to-man and did a good job on her for a while." Southern Oregon (4-8, 1-0 Cascade), which came into the game shooting only 20 percent from behind the arc, finished 6 of 14.
