Class members chose SOHS as its community project for this year. The cash and in-kind donations will paint buildings, repair broken concrete, build more shelters and regrade the parking lot. Praised for her personable approach and caring attitude, Hale led Phoenix to a silver medal in a U.S. News and World Report analysis involving nearly 20,000 schools across the country. Ashland High School was the only other Rogue Valley school to achieve that status. Jeers — to the brainless destruction wreaked by whoever drove onto Mack Field in the Gold Hill Sports Park early Sunday morning and carved "donuts" in the infield and outfield of the baseball diamond, damaging the turf with deep ruts and breaking new sprinkler heads. Little League parents and other volunteers turned out to fill in the ruts so teams could continue to play without risking injury, but permanent repairs will be expensive. If the field must be replaced, that could cost up to $70,000. Cheers — to a grant from the Oregon Lottery that will help purchase a 352-acre ranch along the upper Rogue River and establish the Rogue River Preserve. The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board approved the grant of nearly $1.4 million, which will help the Southern Oregon Nature Conservancy reach its goal of $3.5 million to purchase the property, make some improvements and establish an endowment to protect and enhance the land's natural features.
